What are the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches in BaZi?
The BaZi system (Four Pillars of Destiny) is based on a two-part cosmic alphabet: the 10 Heavenly Stems (Tiāngān, 天干) and the 12 Earthly Branches (Dìzhī, 地支). Together they form a system that encodes time, energy, and personality in a precise grid. Every year, month, day, and hour has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch — and the four time pillars of a birth moment yield the personal BaZi birth chart.
The Heavenly Stems are the Yang component — representing the visible, outwardly carried part of an energy. The Earthly Branches are the Yin component — hiding deeper, concealed energies known as "Hidden Stems."
The 10 Heavenly Stems
The 10 Heavenly Stems arise from the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each in Yang and Yin form: Jiǎ (Yang Wood) — upright growing tree, pioneer spirit; Yǐ (Yin Wood) — flexible vine, adaptability; Bǐng (Yang Fire) — radiant sun, charisma; Dīng (Yin Fire) — candlelight, warm leadership; Wù (Yang Earth) — great mountain, stability; Jǐ (Yin Earth) — fertile garden soil, nurturing; Gēng (Yang Metal) — raw ore or sword, decisiveness; Xīn (Yin Metal) — polished jewel, aesthetics; Rén (Yang Water) — mighty ocean, ambition; Guǐ (Yin Water) — dew and rain, intuition.
The 12 Earthly Branches
The 12 Earthly Branches correspond to the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and represent deeper, hidden earth energies. Each branch contains 1–3 hidden stems that operate like underground forces in the personality.
FAQ: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
How many possible combinations are there?
There are 60 possible Stem-Branch combinations, forming the Sexagesimal Cycle — the 60-year cycle well known in many Asian cultures.
What is the difference between Heavenly Stems and Elements?
The 5 elements are the basic building blocks. The 10 Heavenly Stems are the Yang and Yin expressions of those elements — a finer differentiation. Jiǎ-Wood (Yang) behaves differently from Yǐ-Wood (Yin), even though both belong to the Wood element.
Can I learn BaZi without knowledge of Chinese?
Yes. Many Western BaZi schools teach the system entirely in English or German. The transliterations (Jiǎ, Yǐ, Bǐng, etc.) become intuitively understandable after a short time.
