What are the Ten Gods in BaZi?
The Ten Gods (also called Ten Deities or Shí Shén) are a central concept in the BaZi system (Four Pillars of Destiny). They describe the relationship of each element in your BaZi birth chart to the Day Master (日主 rì zhǔ) — the element representing the day of your birth, your "self." Depending on the relationship to the Day Master, one of ten distinct deities emerges.
The Ten Gods are the tool BaZi practitioners use to read social roles, relationships, resources, and challenges. They reveal more about the dynamic between a person and their environment than the elements alone.
The Ten Deities and Their Meanings
1. Rob Wealth (比肩) – Same element, same polarity
Represents peers, competitors, and siblings. Shows synergies and rivalries with others.
2. Competitor (劫財) – Same element, opposite polarity
More impulsive and risk-ready than Rob Wealth. Challengers who push you forward.
3. Eating God (食神) – Produced element, same polarity
Symbolizes enjoyment, creativity, talents, and nourishment. Shows how you express yourself.
4. Hurting Officer (傷官) – Produced element, opposite polarity
More dynamic, rebellious, and innovative. Talent for creating new paths beyond existing limits.
5. Indirect Wealth (偏財) – Controlled element, same polarity
Windfall wealth, entrepreneurial gains. Also the relationship to the father for men.
6. Direct Wealth (正財) – Controlled element, opposite polarity
Stable, regular income and tangible material security. Relationship to the partner for men.
7. Seven Killings (七殺) – Controlling element, same polarity
Pressure, challenge, and transformative power. When well-integrated: exceptional performance.

10. Direct Resource (正印) – Generating element, opposite polarity
Mother figures, education, protection, and moral support. Where we are nourished and protected.
FAQ: Ten Gods in BaZi
What are the Ten Gods in BaZi?
The Ten Gods describe the relationship of each element in the BaZi chart to the Day Master. They reveal roles, resources, challenges, and relationship dynamics.
How do I determine my Day Master?
The Day Master is the element of the Heavenly Stem on the day of your birth, determined through precise BaZi calculation.
Which of the Ten Gods is best?
No deity is inherently better or worse. The evaluation depends on the context of the entire chart — whether the element strengthens or weakens, whether it is in balance or excess.
Can you read the Ten Gods in isolation?
The Ten Gods are part of the complex BaZi system. A single deity without context of the entire chart gives only an incomplete picture.
