Hexagram 17 – Sui: Following
Hexagram 17 of the I Ching, known as Sui (随) or "Following," consists of the trigram Dui (Joy, Lake) above and Zhen (Thunder, Excitement) below. The image: Thunder retreats into the lake as autumn sets in — it withdraws and follows nature. Following here does not mean blind obedience, but consciously aligning with larger rhythms and forces.
The Image
The I Ching says: "Thunder in the middle of the lake — the image of Following. The superior man at nightfall goes indoors for rest and recuperation." This is an image of wisdom that recognizes when it is time to follow rather than lead, and sees in this not defeat but harmony with the moment.
When Does Hexagram 17 Appear?
Hexagram 17 appears when a situation requires adaptability. This can mean:
- You have completed a phase of intense activity and now rest and reorientation are needed.
- You are fighting against a situation you cannot change — the oracle invites you to accept it.
- A leadership role currently demands more listening than deciding.
- You wonder whether to follow a person, a calling, or an inner impulse.
Following and Personality
In the Enneagram, Type 9 individuals (The Peacemaker) have a natural affinity with Hexagram 17's qualities: the ability to adapt, smooth conflicts, and live in harmony with the environment. The shadow side is the same: self-loss through excessive adaptation. The I Ching is precise here — following without an inner center is compliance, not wisdom.
Practical Reflection
When Hexagram 17 appears, these questions help:
- What am I fighting against that I could release?
- Who or what could I trust if I paused my control impulse?
- What is the current situation showing me about what is truly needed?
