I Ching Hexagram 48: Jing – The Well
Hexagram 48 of the I Ching, known as Jing (井), means "The Well." It is one of the most profound signs in the entire oracle — because the well symbolizes something unchanging: the source of life is always present. What changes is whether people draw deeply enough to reach it.
Structure and Symbolism
Hexagram 48 is formed by the upper trigram Kan (Water, Depth, Danger) over the lower trigram Xun (Wood, Wind, Penetrating). Wood beneath water: the image of a wooden bucket lowered into water to draw it up. It requires the right tool, the right depth, and enough persistence to truly reach the source.
The oracle text: "The Well. You can change the town, but not the well. It knows neither loss nor gain. They come and go and draw from the well." The source is imperishable. But if the rope is too short or the bucket breaks — you draw nothing.
The Three Dangers of the Well
The mud: The well is uncleaned — a symbol of inner stagnation when we neglect access to depth. The short rope: The source exists but the tool doesn't reach it — shallow thinking that can't access deeper truth. The broken bucket: Nearly there, but the vessel can't hold what was gained — the inability to integrate what is received.
