Binah – The Third Sephira of the Tree of Life
Binah (בינה) is the third Sephira in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, associated with understanding, reception, and the archetype of the Great Mother. The word Binah means understanding or discernment in Hebrew.
Binah is the mind's ability to receive the raw creative light (Chokhmah), give it form, and structure it. On the Tree of Life, Binah sits on the Pillar of Severity at the upper left position — part of the first triad together with Keter (the Crown) and Chokhmah (Wisdom).
The Qualities of Binah
Binah carries the archetypal energy of the Great Mother — not in a sentimental-soft sense, but deep, structuring, and limiting in the best sense: just as a mother gives a child form and boundaries, Binah gives form to the creative impulse.
Key qualities include understanding as an active process, reception and shaping of creative ideas, patience and depth of time (Binah is associated with Saturn), the principle of limitation as an act of creation, and deep intuition and recognition of connections.
Binah and Saturn
In Kabbalistic-astrological correspondence, Binah is assigned to the planet Saturn. This seems surprising at first — Saturn as the Great Mother? But the connection runs deep: Saturn sets limits and is therefore creative. Without limitation there is no form. Without form, there is no becoming.
The Great Mother: Ama and Aima
Ama (אמא), the dark, barren mother — potential before manifestation, the silence of the empty womb waiting. Aima (אימא), the bright, fertile mother — the nurturing, form-giving force that brings life into being.
Binah and Chokhmah Together
Chokhmah is the lightning-fast intuitive insight — the creative spark. Binah is what receives this spark, understands it, and gives it form. Without Chokhmah there is no impulse; without Binah there is no form. In personal development: I have an idea (Chokhmah) — how do I make something concrete from it? (Binah).
