Kabbalah Binah: The Third Sephira – Great Understanding

What is Binah in the Kabbalah system?
Binah is the third Sephira of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Its name means "Understanding" or "Insight" in Hebrew. It stands on the left pillar of the Tree of Life, in the triad of upper Sephiroth, forming together with Kether (Crown) and Chokmah (Wisdom) the "Supernal Triangle" — the highest level of consciousness.
Binah is the great understanding that gives form. While Chokmah is raw, lightning-fast wisdom — the thought without form — Binah gives this impulse structure, depth, and expression. She is the cosmic mother, receiving the seed of the idea and shaping it into a vessel.
Astrologically, Binah corresponds to Saturn — the principle of boundary, structure, time, and maturation. Not by coincidence: Binah is the Sephira through which the Infinite first takes form — and thereby becomes limited.
Binah as Cosmic Mother
In Kabbalistic mythology, Binah is the Ama — the dark, silent mother — and the Aima — the bright, fertile mother. This dual nature makes her complex: she is simultaneously the origin of all life and the container of all death, for what takes form must also end.
Binah teaches that understanding goes deeper than knowledge. Knowledge (Chokmah) is the lightning bolt of recognition. Understanding (Binah) is the integration of that lightning into lived life.
FAQ: Binah in Kabbalah
What does Binah mean in Kabbalah?
Binah is the third Sephira of the Tree of Life and means "Understanding." It represents the cosmic mother force that gives shape to the unformed — and thereby creates both boundary and form. It corresponds to Saturn and the color black.
How does Binah differ from Chokmah?
Chokmah is raw wisdom — the lightning impulse of insight. Binah is understanding — the integration and forming of that impulse. Chokmah is Yang, Binah is Yin; Chokmah is father, Binah is mother.
Which planet corresponds to Binah?
Binah corresponds to Saturn — the planet of structure, boundary, time, and maturation. Saturn gives ideas form and limitation, perfectly reflecting Binah's creative character.
