Gematria – When Letters Become Numbers
Gematria is one of the oldest mystical practices of the Kabbalah. It is based on the principle that Hebrew letters are not only linguistic symbols but also carry numerical values. Since each of the 22 Hebrew letters has a specific number assigned to it, every word — and therefore every concept — can be converted into a number. Words sharing the same numerical value share a deeper mystical connection.
Hebrew Letters and Their Numerical Values
In the Hebrew alphabet, each letter has a fixed numerical value: Aleph (א) = 1 through Teth (ט) = 9; Yod (י) = 10 through Tzade (צ) = 90; Qof (ק) = 100 through Tav (ת) = 400. A well-known example: the Hebrew word for life — Chai (חי) — has the value 18 (Chet = 8, Yod = 10). This is why 18 is a lucky number in Jewish tradition.
Three Main Methods of Gematria
Standard Gematria assigns each letter its regular value (1–400). Small Gematria reduces values to a single digit (similar to digit sum in western Numerology). Ordinal Gematria assigns positional values (1–22), emphasizing the letter's order in the alphabet.
Gematria in Mystical Practice
Kabbalistically, Gematria is used to reveal deeper meanings in the Torah. When two seemingly unrelated words share the same numerical value, the Kabbalah sees this as a divine hint about their inner connection. For example, the Hebrew word for serpent (Nachash, נחש = 358) shares its value 358 with Messiah (Maschiach, משיח = 358) — pointing to the mystical dialectic of poison and healing.
Gematria and the Tree of Life
In the kabbalistic Tree of Life, the ten Sephiroth are connected by 22 paths — precisely the number of Hebrew letters. Each path is assigned a letter and thus a numerical value. Gematria is used to deepen understanding of these path qualities.
FAQ – Gematria and Kabbalah
What is Gematria in simple terms?
Gematria is the mystical practice of assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters and comparing words that share the same total value. It is used to discover hidden connections in sacred texts and between concepts.
Is Gematria the same as Numerology?
Not exactly. Western Numerology works with birth dates and names based on 1–9 and master numbers. Gematria is specifically rooted in the Hebrew alphabet and kabbalistic textual analysis. Both share the idea that numbers carry spiritual meaning.
Can I apply Gematria to my name?
Yes — by transcribing your name into Hebrew (or assigning corresponding letters) and adding the values, you obtain a total. Kabbalistic teachers use this value to describe core qualities and soul tasks.
Where is Gematria still practiced today?
Gematria is practiced in traditional Jewish Talmudic scholarship, mystical Kabbalistic practice, modern spiritual schools, and syncretic Western occult traditions such as Hermetic Kabbalah.
