Tikkun Olam – The Repair of the World
Tikkun Olam (תיקון עולם) is one of the most profound concepts in Kabbalah. Literally translated it means "repair of the world" or "healing of the universe". In Kabbalistic thought it goes far beyond philanthropic activity – it describes the cosmic task of every soul to contribute to the completion of creation through its mere existence and conscious actions.
The concept is rooted in the Lurianic Kabbalah of the 16th century, founded by Rabbi Isaac Luria (the "Ari") in Safed, Israel. Luria described the creation of the world as a cosmic accident: Shevirat HaKelim – the shattering of the vessels. Divine vessels shattered under the light of the Infinite, and divine sparks (Nitzotzot) were scattered into the material world.
Soul Repair: Tikkun HaNefesh
Beyond cosmic Tikkun there is personal Tikkun HaNefesh – the repair of one`s own soul. Every soul comes into this world with a specific Tikkun: a particular pattern of behaviours, reactions and beliefs to be transformed. In Kabbalistic thought this is linked to the Tree of Life (Etz Chayyim).
Practising Tikkun in Daily Life
Practising Tikkun Olam begins small: ethical action, intentional prayer, turning away from mistakes, and loving care for others without expectation of return. Kabbalah teaches that every action performed with true compassion and awareness reunites divine sparks with their origin. Learn more at the Kabbalah page at UmbraLux.
