What is the Maya Haab Calendar?
The Maya developed one of the most complex and precise calendar systems in human history. Alongside the Tzolkin (the 260-day ritual calendar), they used the Haab – a solar calendar of 365 days. The Haab thus corresponds to the civil year and served agriculture, taxation, and political organization in the Maya realm.
Structure of the Haab calendar
The Haab divides into 18 months (Uinal) of 20 days each, plus a closing month called Wayeb with only 5 days – totaling 365 days. Each month carries its own energy connected with specific deities, natural phenomena, and human tasks.
The Wayeb – five days outside of time
The Wayeb period was a time of special caution for the classical Maya. These five "nameless days" at year's end were considered dangerous – the order between worlds weakened, and harmful spirits could act more easily. In some communities, people fasted, refrained from heavy work, and prayed more intensely.
Read through a modern lens, the Wayeb is an invitation to introspection: before a new year begins, a time of pausing, releasing, and setting intention.
The Calendar Round: Haab and Tzolkin together
The fascinating aspect of Maya timekeeping: Haab and Tzolkin ran simultaneously – like two interlocking wheels. Together they form the Calendar Round of 52 years (18,980 days) – the time before the same Tzolkin-Haab date combination recurs. For the Maya, this was a great cycle marked by special rituals.
