What Is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga (Sanskrit: अभ्यङ्ग) is the ayurvedic practice of self- or partner-massage with warm oil, ideally performed daily in the morning. In classical Ayurveda, abhyanga is considered one of the most important dinacharya (daily routine) practices. The Charaka Samhita describes it as a remedy against exhaustion, Vata imbalances, and the aging process.
The name combines "abhi" (toward) and "anga" (limb) — literally: turning toward the body. This captures the essence: abhyanga is not just massage but a form of conscious attention to the physical self.
Effects on the Three Doshas
Abhyanga affects all three constitutional forces but is most powerful for Vata. For Vata types (dry, cold, mobile, restless): warm heavy oil grounds and moistens, calming nervousness and improving sleep. Best oil: sesame (heavy, warming, grounding). For Pitta types (hot, sharp, intense): cooler oils like coconut or sunflower oil cool and soothe. For Kapha types (heavy, cool, stable): lighter oils like mustard or almond oil are better, with a more vigorous massage to stimulate circulation.
Step-by-Step Abhyanga
1. Choose and warm your oil for your dosha type — warm but not hot. 2. Prepare 15–20 minutes and an old towel. 3. Apply oil from head to toe: circular strokes on scalp and joints, long gliding strokes toward the heart on limbs, clockwise circles on the abdomen. Feet deserve special attention in Ayurveda. 4. Rest 5–20 minutes to let oil absorb. 5. Warm shower without harsh soap to preserve a thin oil film on the skin.
How Often?
Daily in the morning is ideal. Two to three times per week already brings noticeable benefits. In autumn and winter, when Vata energy is strongest, abhyanga is especially valuable.
Scientific Perspective
Modern research confirms some traditional claims: studies show reductions in cortisol, improved sleep quality, enhanced lymphatic circulation, and positive effects on heart rate variability. Oil penetrates the skin and nourishes connective tissue — particularly fat-soluble compounds like sesame.
