Prakriti and Vikruti: Understanding Your Ayurvedic Constitution

What Is Prakriti?
Prakriti (Sanskrit: प्रकृति, "nature, original state") is in Ayurveda the individual constitution a person is born with. It is determined by the ratio of the three doshas — Vata (Air+Space), Pitta (Fire+Water), and Kapha (Earth+Water) — at the moment of conception. This constellation remains constant throughout life.
Prakriti is your biological and psychological blueprint: describing how your body naturally functions — digestive fire, sleep patterns, emotional tendencies, learning style, physical build. It's not a diagnosis but a description of your natural strengths and tendencies.
What Is Vikruti?
Vikruti (Sanskrit: विकृति, "change, deviation") is your current state — the dosha distribution now, as opposed to your original nature. Vikruti is always in motion: influenced by season, stress, diet, sleep, emotional events, and life phases.
When Prakriti and Vikruti align, someone is in balance. When they differ, an imbalance is present — and that is where Ayurvedic therapy begins.
The Difference: An Example
Someone with Prakriti of 50% Pitta, 30% Vata, 20% Kapha is focused, passionate, with good digestive fire. After a long summer with work stress, too little sleep, and too much coffee, their Vikruti shifts: Pitta and Vata are elevated. Symptoms: irritability, inflamed skin, restless sleep, overheating. Ayurvedic recommendation: cool Pitta (diet, herbs, routine) and calm Vata (oil, grounding, rhythm).
The Three Prakriti Types
Theoretically there are seven Prakriti types: three single constitutions (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), three dual constitutions (Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, Vata-Kapha), and one tri-dosha constitution (Sama Prakriti). Sama Prakriti — all three doshas in equal balance — is very rare and considered ideal.
Seasons and Vikruti
Seasons directly influence Vikruti. In spring, Kapha rises naturally. In summer, Pitta rises. In autumn/winter, Vata rises. With this knowledge, one can prophylactically counteract imbalances. In June, at the start of high summer, Pitta pacification is especially relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my Prakriti change over life?
No. Prakriti is the innate constitution and remains constant. What changes is Vikruti — the current state. Extreme events can shift dosha expression persistently, but the underlying constitution doesn't change.
What happens when Vikruti and Prakriti diverge significantly?
Strong divergences indicate chronic imbalances that burden health. The longer an elevated dosha goes unaddressed, the more deeply it embeds in tissues (Dhatus) and channels (Srotas).
Which dosha combination is most common?
Vata-Pitta and Pitta-Kapha are statistically most frequent. Pure single types are rare; Tri-Dosha (Sama Prakriti) is very rare.
Must I follow Ayurveda strictly or do small changes suffice?
Even small, consistent adjustments in diet, sleep, and daily rhythm can have great impact. Ayurveda is a long-term system; radical cures without understanding are less effective than gentle daily changes.
