What is the Year Pillar in BaZi?
The BaZi horoscope (Chinese astrology of the Four Pillars of Destiny) consists of four pillars: Hour, Day, Month, and Year. Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Year Pillar represents the year of your birth — showing the cosmic and social context into which you were born.
If you regard the Four Pillars as layers of personality, the Year Pillar represents what is visible from outside: the social mask, reputation, relationship with society, and early imprints from family and environment. It is essentially the "first impression" of the entire BaZi chart.
What the Year Pillar Shows
- Social context: Your relationship with society, authority, and your "external presentation."
- Early childhood imprints: The first years of life and the atmosphere in the family of origin.
- Karma and innate resources: What "inheritance" you brought — both opportunities and limitations.
- Career external impression: How others perceive your professional role and social status.
Year Pillar vs. Day Pillar: The Difference
While the Day Pillar (Day Master) represents the deepest self — personality, core, and soul — the Year Pillar shows the outer layer. The Day Master is who you are; the Year Pillar shows where and how you appear.
