What are the 8 trigrams of the I Ching?

The 8 trigrams (八卦, Bāguà) are the building blocks of the I Ching. Each trigram consists of three stacked lines, either solid (Yang) or broken (Yin). From these three positions, 2³ = 8 combinations arise – eight fundamental symbols representing the eight primal forces of nature and human experience.

Two trigrams stacked together form a hexagram. Since there are 8 × 8 = 64 possible combinations, the 64 I Ching hexagrams arise. The trigram is therefore the mother of all I Ching structures – and a direct connection to Human Design and Gene Keys.

The 8 trigrams at a glance

☰ Qian – Heaven: Pure creative force, father energy, leadership, initiative. ☷ Kun – Earth: Receptive, nourishing force, mother energy, patience. ☳ Zhen – Thunder: Sudden awakening, breakthrough, creative shock. ☵ Kan – Water: Depth, danger, adaptability, emotional truth. ☶ Gen – Mountain: Stillness, meditation, appropriate stopping, inner peace. ☴ Xun – Wind: Persistence, gentle influence, penetrating power. ☲ Li – Fire: Clarity, intelligence, beauty, illumination. ☱ Dui – Lake: Joy, openness, speech, social connection.

Trigrams in Human Design and Gene Keys

The 8 trigrams are not only significant in the I Ching. In Human Design, they form the basis for the 64 Gates in the Body Graph. In the Gene Keys, the same 64 keys are directly derived from the I Ching hexagrams. Understanding the trigrams means understanding both systems at a deeper level.

FAQ: The 8 Trigrams of the I Ching

What are the 8 trigrams in the I Ching?

The 8 trigrams (Bāguà) are eight three-line combinations of Yin and Yang representing eight primal forces: Heaven, Earth, Thunder, Water, Mountain, Wind, Fire, Lake. They form the building blocks of all 64 I Ching hexagrams.

How do the 64 hexagrams arise from the trigrams?

Each hexagram consists of two stacked trigrams – a lower (inner) and an upper (outer) one. Since there are 8 trigrams, 8 × 8 = 64 hexagrams arise.

How are I Ching trigrams and Human Design connected?

In Human Design, the 64 Gates of the Body Graph are based on the 64 I Ching hexagrams, which are in turn built from the 8 trigrams. Anyone with a Gate in their Human Design chart carries the energy of both associated trigrams within them.
