What Does "Mercury Retrograde" Mean?

Three to four times a year, Mercury seems to move backward across the sky for about three weeks. The planet doesn't actually change direction. Mercury orbits the Sun on a faster inner track. When it passes between the Sun and the Earth, our angle of view shifts so that it seems to move backward against the stars for a few weeks.

It is striking how the retrograde phases move through the elements: in 2026 all three fall in water signs, in 2027 each one moves back into an air sign, and in 2028 all fall in air signs. What Is the Shadow Period?

Before Mercury turns retrograde, it is already passing through the stretch of the zodiac it will then cross again backward. This pre-shadow begins two to three weeks before the station. After the direct station, it takes another two to three weeks to reach the point where it turned around: the post-shadow. Astrologically, the pre-shadow is seen as a time when themes announce themselves, and the post-shadow as a time when what came up during the retrograde becomes clear.
