From the Tarot de Marseille to Rider-Waite

The card hasn’t always looked like this. In the older Tarot de Marseille, a young man stands between two women while Cupid aims his bow and arrow at him from above. This scene was often read as a choice between two paths, between vice and virtue or between two ways of life. Arthur Edward Waite replaced it in his deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, with the couple in paradise.
