How Chiron is calculated
The calculator runs the same calculation as the UmbraLux app, in three steps:
- 1
Turn the clock time into Universal Time
Your birth time is the clock time at your birthplace. With the time zone that applied there on that day (the IANA time zone database knows summer times and older rules), it becomes Universal Time (UTC). Without a time, the calculator takes your whole birthday at your birthplace.
- 2
Calculate Chiron
Chiron's orbit crosses those of Saturn and Uranus; fixed orbital elements would drift far off over decades. So the calculator takes a table interpolated from JPL's ephemeris and from it the apparent geocentric longitude for the moment.
- 3
Read the sign
The longitude divided by 30° gives the sign: 0° to 30° is Aries, 30° to 60° Taurus and so on (tropical zodiac). The remainder is the degree within the sign.
Example: 15 May 1990, 14:30, Berlin
On 15 May 1990 summer time applied in Berlin (UTC+2), so 14:30 was 12:30 Universal Time. At that moment Chiron stood at 13°12′ Cancer.
Chiron had entered Cancer on 21 June 1988 and left it on 21 July 1991: anyone born in that time has Chiron in Cancer.
What Chiron means in astrology
Astrology calls Chiron the wounded healer: the place of an old wound from which understanding for others grows.

Questions about Chiron
How long does Chiron stay in a sign?
Very differently, as its orbit is strongly elliptical: a good one to two years in Virgo, Libra and Scorpio, six to a little over eight years in Pisces and Aries.
What is the Chiron return?
Chiron takes about 50 years through the zodiac. When it returns to its birth position around the 50th year of life, astrology speaks of the Chiron return.
How accurate is the calculator?
On five dates from 1950 to 2024 Chiron lay within a tenth of an arcsecond of the data of JPL Horizons, NASA's ephemeris service.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser; your date, time and place are neither sent nor stored. Only your device remembers your last entry, and you can delete it below the form.
