48. The Well
Jing (The Well) shows water over wood. The image of a well from which one draws water. 'The town may be changed, but the well cannot be changed.' People, empires, and trends come and go, but the basic needs (food, truth, meaning) – the well – remain. The well stands for access to your inner wisdom or to the infrastructure of life. Caution: If the rope is too short or the jug breaks, all effort was in vain. Maintain your access to the depths. A well is only useful if one can drink from it.
The Well. One may change the city, but not the well. It does not lose, it does not gain. They come and go, drawing from the well. If one has almost reached the water but the rope falls short, or the pitcher breaks, that brings misfortune.
Infrastructure
Jing reminds us: Without access to the source (energy, truth, water), even the most beautiful city is of no use.
Operative Resources
Access. The ability to make resources available to yourself and others.
System Blocks
Superficiality – One digs many shallow holes instead of one deep well.
System-Hacks
Maintain the db.
- Self-Care: Do something for your baseline energy today (sleep, water, nutrition).
- Focus: Work on ONE thing with full concentration for 1 hour.
Image
Above the wood is the water: the image of the Well. So the noble one spurs the people on to work and urges them to help each other.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Neglect – The jug breaks. One can't get at one's own resources or has let the access get 'muddied'.
Strategy
Maintain the well (infrastructure, body, mind). Make sure that you and others have access. Go into depth, not breadth.
The Lines
- Beginning: Muddied (Decay)The well is so silted up that one cannot drink. Animals no longer come to the old well. Total neglect. Talents wither away.
- Level 2: Leak (Waste)In the well shaft one shoots at fish. The pitcher is broken and leaks. You waste your talents on trifles instead of what is essential.
- Level 3: Unused (Frustration)The well has been cleaned, but nobody drinks from it. That is sad. One could draw from it if the king were wise. Unrecognized potential.
- Level 4: Renovation (Maintenance)The well is being walled with stone. No fault. You renovate and work on yourself. A necessary pause for restoration.
- Level 5: Clarity (Fulfillment)The well holds a clear, cool spring. One can drink. The highest good fortune. Wisdom is accessible and pure.
- Conclusion: Openness (Abundance)One draws from the well. It must not be covered. One possesses truthfulness. Exalted good fortune. The spring is open to all. Sharing is care put into practice.
