What Is the Day Master?

In BaZi, the Chinese Four Pillars chart, the birth chart consists of four pillars for the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem at the top and an Earthly Branch below. The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. It is considered the most important point of the whole chart because it represents you: your core, your basic energy, your way of meeting the world.

There are ten Heavenly Stems and therefore ten possible Day Masters: each of the five elements wood, fire, earth, metal and water in a yang and a yin form. The Ten Day Masters

The classical images make the ten Day Masters tangible:

• Jia (Yang Wood), The great tree: Upright, ambitious and steady in its growth. Needs space and light and gives others support.
• Yi (Yin Wood), The flower, the vine: Adaptable, nimble and socially skilled. Finds its way around obstacles.
• Bing (Yang Fire), The sun: Radiant, warm and generous. Lights up everything around it and wants to be seen.
• Ding (Yin Fire), The candle: Warm, focused and steady. Lights the dark with depth and closeness.
• Wu (Yang Earth), The mountain: Solid, reliable and hard to shake. Gives others orientation.
• Ji (Yin Earth), The fertile field: Nourishing, patient and caring. Lets others grow.
• Geng (Yang Metal), The sword, the raw ore: Decisive, direct, sometimes sharp. Gains its form through challenge.
• Xin (Yin Metal), The jewel: Aesthetic, precise and conscious of value. Seeks refinement and beauty.
• Ren (Yang Water), The ocean, the great river: Far-sighted, strategic and powerful in motion. Carries a lot within.
• Gui (Yin Water), Rain, dew, the spring: Intuitive, sensitive and quiet. Nourishes in secret.

Strong or Weak: Why the Day Master Doesn't Stand Alone

The Day Master shows the basic nature, but the full picture only emerges from the interplay of all four pillars. Its strength is decisive: if it is nourished by the season of birth, that is, the month branch, and by supporting elements in the chart, it is considered strong; if that support is missing, weak. A Yang Wood born in spring stands in its best season; in autumn, the season of metal, it has to hold its own more. From this, BaZi interpretation derives which elements do someone good and which overwhelm them.

The Ten Gods

The Ten Gods follow from the Day Master: the ten possible relationships between you and the other stems in the chart. Each element stands in one of five relationships to the Day Master, each in a yin and a yang form:

• Same element: companions and rivals, meaning friendship, competition and independence.
• Element you produce: expression, creativity and talent.
• Element you control: possessions, money and what you shape.
• Element that controls you: authority, duty and pressure.
• Element that nourishes you: support, knowledge and backing.

Is a strong Day Master better than a weak one?

No. Strong and weak describe the balance in the chart, not a judgment. According to BaZi teaching, both need different kinds of support.

What is the difference between the Day Master and the Chinese animal sign?

The animal sign belongs to the Earthly Branch of the year pillar and is shared by everyone born that year. The Day Master is more personal: it changes from day to day.
