What Are the Houses in the Birth Chart?

The twelve houses divide the birth chart into twelve areas of life. Put simply, the planets show what is at work, the zodiac signs how it works, and the houses where it works: in which area of your life a planet unfolds its quality, whether in partnership, at work or at home.

The houses begin at the Ascendant, the cusp of the first house, and run counterclockwise around the chart. The boundary of each house is called its cusp; the sign it falls in colors the theme of the house.

Why the Time of Birth Matters

While the planets move slowly, the house system turns once a day through the whole zodiac along with the Earth. Roughly every two hours a new sign rises on the horizon. Even an hour's difference can therefore move planets into another house. For reliable houses you need your date and place of birth and a time of birth that is as exact as possible; without a birth time, the houses are only an approximation.

There are different house systems that divide the sky in different ways, such as Placidus, Koch, Porphyry or whole signs. UmbraLux calculates with Placidus: the cusps divide the time a point of the zodiac takes from rising to the Midheaven into three equal parts, and likewise the time from the IC to rising. The first house begins at the Ascendant and describes how you come across to others: appearance, temperament, sense of your body and the way you start new things. Planets here are especially visible. Its natural sign is Aries.

3rd House: Communication and Surroundings

The third house describes thinking, speaking, writing and learning, siblings, the neighborhood and short journeys. Natural sign: Gemini.

4th House: Roots and Home

The fourth house begins at the IC and stands for family, origins, the place you live and inner security, the roots you live from. Natural sign: Cancer.

Angular, Succedent and Cadent Houses

Tradition divides the houses into three groups. The angular houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 begin at the four axes of the chart; planets there act most directly and visibly. The succedent houses 2, 5, 8 and 11 consolidate what the angular houses set in motion, often through resources and bonds. The cadent houses 3, 6, 9 and 12 process and prepare: learning, daily life, the search for meaning and retreat.

Empty Houses: A Problem?

No. Ten planets are spread over twelve houses, so some always stay empty. An empty house doesn't mean its theme doesn't matter. It is read through the sign on its cusp and that sign's ruling planet, and it is activated by transits when planets pass through it for a while.

What do the houses in the birth chart show?

The areas of life in which the planets act: from appearance (1st house) through partnership (7th house) and career (10th house) to retreat (12th house).

Can I work out the houses without a time of birth?

Only roughly. Because the houses shift quickly with the Earth's rotation, the exact time of birth is decisive. The signs of the planets, on the other hand, can usually be determined reliably without a time.
