The 12 houses in the horoscope: what each life area means

What are the astrological houses?

The 12 houses divide the horoscope into 12 life areas. While zodiac signs show how energy operates, houses show where it operates — in which area of your life a planet unfolds its quality.

The houses begin at the ascendant (1st house) and move counter-clockwise. Their starting point (cusp) is determined by which zodiac sign sits there.

The first six houses: personal sphere

• 1st house (Self): Appearance, body, immediate reactions — dominated by the ascendant.
• 2nd house (Resources): Finances, possessions, self-worth, and what you build and hold.
• 3rd house (Communication): Speaking, writing, thinking, siblings, short trips.
• 4th house (Home): Family, origins, inner security, home. The IC (Imum Coeli) sits here.
• 5th house (Expression): Creativity, romance, children, play, joy.
• 6th house (Daily life): Work, health, habits, routines, service.

The second six houses: social and transpersonal sphere

• 7th house (Partnership): Marriage, relationships, cooperation. The Descendant sits here.
• 8th house (Transformation): Death, rebirth, sexuality, shared resources, the hidden.
• 9th house (Worldview): Philosophy, religion, long travel, higher education.
• 10th house (Career): Profession, status, public reputation. The MC (Midheaven) sits here.
• 11th house (Community): Friendships, networks, groups, future visions.
• 12th house (Hidden): Unconscious, retreat, spirituality, the invisible.

How planets work in the houses

Every planet activates the theme of the house it occupies. Venus in the 2nd house shows pleasure in building resources. Saturn in the 7th brings seriousness and lessons in partnerships. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most direct and visible.
