What Are Enneagram Health Levels?

Enneagram health levels are nine stages describing how psychologically healthy or unhealthy a type functions at any given moment. Developed by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson, they reveal that every type can be brilliant or destructive – depending on their current level.

This is one of the deepest insights of the Enneagram system: it's not about which type you are, but at what level you're living your type.

The Three Main Zones

Healthy (Levels 1–3)

At these levels, each type expresses its highest qualities: liberation and full integration (Level 1), psychological capacity with the core quality expressed warmly (Level 2), and visible, constructive contribution to the world (Level 3).

Average (Levels 4–6)

Most people spend most days here: defining themselves through social role (Level 4), becoming more rigid to create security (Level 5), and overcompensating to fight fears (Level 6).

Unhealthy (Levels 7–9)

The most destructive patterns emerge here: harming others through behavior (Level 7), deep psychological disturbances (Level 8), and extreme self-destruction or destruction of others (Level 9).

Why Health Levels Matter More Than Type

Two people of the same type can appear completely different. A Type 8 at Level 2 is an inspiring, protective leader. A Type 8 at Level 8 is a tyrannical, manipulative power-seeker. Same core pattern – opposite effects.

Integration describes how a type adopts the healthy qualities of another type (stress direction used positively). Disintegration describes how a type adopts the negative qualities of another type under stress. Health levels complement this: integration works better the higher the level.
