What are Enneagram Arrows?
Enneagram arrows (also called integration and disintegration arrows) describe where a personality type moves when under stress or when actively growing. Each of the nine types has two directional movements: disintegration (stress) and integration (growth). These arrows are not weaknesses — they reveal the dynamic nature of the Enneagram as a living system.
Important: an Enneagram type always remains their core type. The arrows show which qualities of another type become activated under certain circumstances.
The Nine Enneagram Arrows at a Glance
Type 1: Stress → Type 4 | Growth → Type 7

Type 8: Stress → Type 5 | Growth → Type 2
Under stress, Type 8 withdraws and becomes mistrustful like an unhealthy Type 5. In growth, they open their heart to genuine care — like a healthy Type 2.
Type 9: Stress → Type 6 | Growth → Type 3
Under stress, Type 9 becomes anxious and worried like an unhealthy Type 6. In growth, they develop self-expression and purposefulness — like a healthy Type 3.
How to Use the Arrows for Growth
The stress direction shows where you can observe yourself: if you notice unusual behavior, you are likely living your stress pattern. Self-observation alone is healing. The growth direction shows which qualities to consciously cultivate — opening to strengths not yet fully integrated.
FAQ: Enneagram Arrows
What are Enneagram Arrows?
Enneagram arrows describe the directional movement of a type under stress (disintegration) and in growth (integration). Each type has two arrows.
Does this mean I transform into another type?
No. An Enneagram type always remains their core type. The arrows show which traits of another type become activated under certain circumstances.
How do I recognize when I'm living my stress direction?
Watch for behavior that is unusual or atypical for you. If you're a Type 1 and suddenly become very melancholic, you're likely living your stress direction toward Type 4.
Which arrows are most relevant for relationships?
All arrows are relevant. The stress direction is particularly important, as partners often notice first when someone slips into their stress pattern.
