What Is Human Design Determination?

Determination (part of PHS — Primary Health System) is a concept within Human Design that focuses on the optimal way to take in food and digest it. It is not primarily about what you eat but how, when, and in what context you eat. Human Design derives Determination from the unconscious Sun (Design Sun) in your personal chart, specifically from its Color and Tone.

Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, proposed that the individual digestion type is one of the most profound keys to physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance — and that most people eat, sleep, and live against their natural Determination.

The Six Determination Types

1. Appetite: Eat only when genuinely hungry — not out of habit, social pressure, or emotional comfort. Skipping meals is fine. Eating without hunger is seen as harmful to both digestion and mental clarity.

2. Thirst: Hydration is central. What you drink (and when) is considered more important than the food itself. Quality water, herbal teas, and water-rich foods take priority.

3. Tasting: Slow eating, thorough chewing, and attention to flavor and quality are essential. Eating quickly or while distracted is considered especially unfavorable for them.

4. Touch: Temperature and texture of food matter directly. These people respond to mouthfeel and food temperature — raw versus cooked, hot versus cold — in ways that, according to this teaching, affect their digestion.

5. Sound: The environment during eating is decisive. Noise, arguments, or agitating conversations during meals are seen as disrupting digestion. Calm atmospheres, music, or silence are ideal.

6. Light: Lighting conditions during meals take center stage. These people are sensitive to the type of light present — daylight is considered supportive of digestion, while harsh artificial light or darkness is seen as a hindrance.

Why Determination Matters

From a Human Design perspective, Determination is not just a dietary recommendation but a deeper signal about how you best take in food and impressions. Eating against your Determination — for instance, rushing through lunch in a noisy cafeteria when you have Sound Determination — leads, in this view, not only to discomfort after meals but also to mental fog and emotional instability.

The connection has not been scientifically established, but some people report that after aligning with their Determination they feel more at ease when eating and clearer in mind.

How Do I Find My Determination?

Determination is calculated from your personal Human Design chart — from the unconscious Sun, the Sun's position 88 degrees of solar arc before birth, about three months earlier. It is fixed and does not change over a lifetime. UmbraLux calculates your Human Design from your birth data with type, strategy, authority, profile, incarnation cross and definition; it doesn't calculate your Determination.

FAQ: Human Design Determination

What is Human Design Determination?

Determination is the individual digestion type in Human Design. It describes under what conditions — environment, pace, timing, sensory input — the body can best absorb and process food and energy.

How many Determination types are there?

Six: Appetite, Thirst, Tasting, Touch, Sound, and Light — each linked to a different sensory quality or environmental factor.

Is Determination the same as nutritional advice?

No. Determination makes no claims about nutrients, calories, or specific foods. It describes the optimal manner of eating — the how and when, not the what. It complements but does not replace medical or nutritional guidance.

Can I find my Determination myself?

Determination requires your complete Human Design chart — exact birth date, time, and location.
