Venus in the Maya Cosmos: More Than a Planet
For the Maya, Venus was not an ordinary planet but a cosmic being of the highest significance. In Maya tradition, Venus was associated with the deity Kukulcan (the feathered serpent god, corresponding to Quetzalcoatl in the Aztec system) — a symbol of death, transformation and rebirth.
The Maya Venus cycle spans 584 days — the synodic period of Venus, meaning the time Venus needs to complete one orbit around the Sun as seen from Earth and return to the same point. This period was calculated with extraordinary precision by Maya astronomers and documented in the codices (particularly the Dresden Codex).
The Five Phases of the Venus Cycle
- Morning Star Phase (Heliacal Rising) — approx. 263 days: Venus appears as the brilliant morning star. A time of new beginnings but also caution — freshly risen Venus was considered warlike and impulsive.
- Superior Conjunction — approx. 50 days: Venus is invisible, behind the Sun. A phase of transition and inner transformation.
- Evening Star Phase — approx. 263 days: Venus appears as the evening star. A time of maturity, reflection and understanding.
- Inferior Conjunction (Retrograde) — approx. 8 days: Venus passes through the underworld (below the solar line). A critical moment — a time of death and rebirth.
- Invisible Phase — brief preparation for the next cycle.
Why 5×584 = 8 Years?
One of the most fascinating Maya astronomical discoveries: five Venus cycles of 584 days each equal exactly eight solar years (5 × 584 = 2920 days = 8 × 365 days). After eight years, Venus reappears at exactly the same position in the sky. This knowledge connected the Maya calendar system with the Venus calendar into a complex cosmic system.
Venus Cycle and Personal Development
Contemporary interpreters of the Maya calendar see in the Venus cycle a mirror of personal development cycles. The alternating phases — rise, peak, disappearance, underworld, rebirth — can be related to one's own life story:
- When are you in the "rising" — full of energy and new beginnings?
- When are you in the "evening star" phase — in reflection and maturity?
- When are you going through an "underworld" — a phase of loss from which new life emerges?
FAQ: Maya Venus Cycle
How long is a Maya Venus cycle?
A complete Venus cycle lasts 584 days, during which Venus alternates between morning star, evening star and invisible phases. Five such cycles equal exactly eight solar years.
Why was Venus so important to the Maya?
Venus was for the Maya a symbol of transformation and rebirth, connected to the myth of Kukulcan/Quetzalcoatl. Its phases served as a calendar for military campaigns, rituals and important decisions.
What is the Venus Round in the Maya system?
The Venus Round describes the cycle of 104 years (13 × 8 years), after which Venus appears again at exactly the same positions in the Maya calendar. This cycle was central to Maya prophecies and rituals.
What corresponds to Venus retrograde in the Maya system?
The "inferior conjunction" — when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun and becomes invisible — corresponds astrologically to retrograde. For the Maya, this was a particularly critical phase: the journey into the underworld, associated with death and rebirth.
