Mayan Kin Calculator

Your kin is your birthday's place in the Tzolkin, the 260-day calendar, counted after the Dreamspell of José and Lloydine Argüelles: one of 20 seals and one of 13 tones. The calculator counts it like the UmbraLux app and adds your oracle, wavespell and castle.

Date of birth

The calculation runs in your browser. Your birth data is neither sent nor stored; only this device remembers your last entry.

How the kin is calculated

The calculator counts like the UmbraLux app, in four steps:

  1. 1

    Count the days

The calculator counts the days from your birthday to 21 December 2012, a fixed point of the Dreamspell: Kin 207 (Blue Crystal Hand). The Dreamspell leaves 29 February out ("0.0 Hunab Ku"), so every year moves the kin on by 365 days.

  2. 2

    Go round the 260

The days are counted round the circle of 260 kins; the result is your kin, between 1 and 260.

  3. 3

    Read seal and tone

The seal is the kin's place in the circle of 20 seals, (kin − 1) mod 20 + 1, the tone its place in the circle of 13 tones, (kin − 1) mod 13 + 1. Kin 1 is the Red Magnetic Dragon.

  4. 4

    Lay out the oracle

Guide, analog and antipode carry your tone: the analog seal adds up with yours to 19 (the Sun, 20, counts as 0), the antipode is the seal ten on, and the guide has your colour and depends on the tone. The occult kin is 261 minus your kin.

Example: 15 May 1990

15 May 1990 is Kin 17 (Red Self-Existing Earth): seal 17, tone 4.

Its oracle: guide Kin 173 (Red Self-Existing Skywalker), analog Kin 82 (White Self-Existing Wind), antipode Kin 147 (Blue Self-Existing Hand), occult Kin 244 (Yellow Planetary Seed).

The Dreamspell and the Maya count

The Dreamspell takes over the Maya's 260-day calendar, the Tzolkin, but counts differently: it leaves 29 February out and fixes the count to the Gregorian year. The traditional count, kept by Maya daykeepers in Guatemala to this day, follows the days without a break (GMT correlation). The UmbraLux app and this calculator count after the Dreamspell.

Questions about the Mayan kin

Why does another calculator show a different kin?

Because there are two counts: the Dreamspell, which UmbraLux follows, and the traditional count of the Maya. For the birthdays from 1940 to 2024 the two give the same kin on not a single day.

I was born on 29 February. What is my kin?

The Dreamspell does not count 29 February as a day of its own ("0.0 Hunab Ku"): it has the kin of 28 February.

Does the time of birth matter?

No. In the Dreamspell only the date counts.

What does the oracle show?

Your kin sits at the centre of five: the guide above leads, the analog on the right supports, the antipode on the left challenges, and the occult kin below shows a hidden strength, as the Dreamspell reads them.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; your date is neither sent nor stored. Only your device remembers your last entry, and you can delete it below the form.
