15. Modesty
Qian (Modesty) is the image of a mountain beneath the earth. True greatness (mountain) that does not put itself on display but serves (earth). It is about reducing the ego and optimizing the 'signal-to-noise ratio'. Whoever has substance does not need to be loud.
Modesty meets with success. The noble one sees it through to the end.
Substance Check
Qian is the polar opposite of narcissism. It is the quality that remains when the hype has faded.
Operative Resources
Grounded self-assurance. An unshakable self-confidence that needs no external validation.
System Blocks
Pretense – The attempt to seem like more than you are (smoke and mirrors).
System-Hacks
Ground yourself.
- Reality Check: What can I really do (skills), and where am I only pretending?
- Service Mindset: Ask in every conversation today: 'How can I help?'
Image
In the midst of the earth is a mountain: the image of Modesty. So the noble one diminishes what is abundant and increases what is scant.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Self-Sabotage – False modesty ('fishing for compliments') or hiding your own competence out of fear of being visible.
Strategy
Reduce what is too much (arrogance), increase what is too little (self-worth). Bring the system into balance. Let results speak, not marketing.
The Lines
- Beginning: Difficult Start (Safe Passage)A modest noble one who crosses the great river. Good fortune. Modesty eases even risky undertakings.
- Level 2: Resonance (Charisma)Modesty that expresses itself. Persistence brings good fortune. When authenticity comes naturally from the core, it draws others in.
- Level 3: Achievement (Recognition)A noble one who is both deserving and modest brings consummate success. Whoever achieves much but does not boast about it is supported by everyone.
- Level 4: Appropriateness (Efficiency)Nothing that would not be beneficial. Modesty in action. Doing the right thing in the right place, without fuss.
- Level 5: Necessary Severity (Correction)Not making a show of wealth toward one's neighbor. It is beneficial to attack forcefully. Sometimes balance also calls for strictness and correction.
- Conclusion: Self-Criticism (Discipline)Modesty that expresses itself. It is beneficial to set armies in motion to punish one's own city. Work on your own ego.
