30. The Clinging

Li (The Clinging) is fire. It stands for brightness, clarity, and consciousness. But fire always needs something to cling to (wood). It cannot exist in a vacuum. 'Li' symbolizes intelligent dependency: The mind needs matter, the vision needs implementation. It is the sign of 'seers' and strategists. You see things with crystal clarity. But be careful not to burn out. A fire that burns too wildly consumes its fuel too quickly.

ClarityVision

The Clinging. Persistence is beneficial. It leads to success. Tending the cow brings good fortune (gentleness feeds the fire).

Light of Consciousness

Li teaches us that clarity also means responsibility. Those who see must lead.

Operative Resources

Perception. The ability to see reality undistorted.

System Blocks

Dependency – Clinging to people or things because one is not enough for oneself.

System-Hacks

Illuminate it.

  • Vision Board: Visualize your goal with crystal clarity.
  • Daylight: Make a point of spending time outdoors (refuel on 'Li').

Image

Brightness rises up twice: the image of Fire. So the great man lights up the four regions of the world.

Shadow Challenge

Shadow: Burnout – The fire burns too hot and consumes the substance. Or: Instability (a straw fire).

Strategy

Find the right fuel for your fire (meaning). Bind yourself to good principles. Be clear in your vision, but sustainable in your energy.

The Lines

  • Beginning: Confusion (Orientation)The tracks are tangled. If one takes care, there is no fault. At the start everything is unclear. Earnestness helps with navigating.
  • Level 2: Center (Clarity)A yellow glow. Exalted good fortune. The color of the center and of culture. One has found the perfect balance.
  • Level 3: Twilight (Melancholy)In the glow of the setting sun, people either drum on the pot and sing, or they sigh over old age. Misfortune. Fear of transience. Live in the moment!
  • Level 4: Straw Fire (Transience)How suddenly it comes, blazes up, dies, is cast aside. A flash in the pan. An inglorious rise and fall without substance.
  • Level 5: Purification (Healing)Tears in torrents, sighs and laments. Good fortune. The pain of realization leads to improvement. Catharsis.
  • Conclusion: Correction (Precision)The king sets out to punish. Killing the leader, taking the retinue captive. No fault. One must tackle the evil at its root.

  • What do I burn for, and do I have enough fuel to keep shining in the long run?
