52. Keeping Still
Gen (Keeping Still) shows a mountain over a mountain. Total stillness. Pausing. Keeping the back still. It is the counterpart to thunder – the conscious mastery of impulse. 'Keep your back so still that you no longer feel your body.' That is the art of focus. When the outside falls silent, the ego stops demanding. It is not about passivity, but about Wu Wei – acting through non-action. When one must walk, one walks. When one must stand, one stands. Be the mountain in your own life.
Keeping Still. Holding his back still, so that he no longer senses his body. He walks into his courtyard and sees none of his people. No fault.
Focus
Gen is the basis of all mastery. Without the ability to keep still, your energy scatters.
Operative Resources
Selective ignorance. The ability to radically block out what is unimportant.
System Blocks
Hyperactivity – Trying to solve problems by doing even more instead of first clarifying the focus.
System-Hacks
`sleep(1000)`
- Meditation: Sit down today for 10 minutes without music or distraction.
- Radio Silence: Turn off ALL notifications for 2 hours.
Image
Mountains standing side by side: the image of Keeping Still. So the noble one quiets his thoughts and does not move beyond his station.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Restlessness – A 'carousel of thoughts'. Being driven by desires. Constant activity as an escape from standstill.
Strategy
Go into stillness. Become the observer of your impulses instead of their slave. Set hard boundaries against distraction. Be in the now.
The Lines
- Beginning: Stop (Intuition)Keeping the toes still. No fault. Lasting persistence is beneficial. Stopping before one has even set off. Great clarity at the source.
- Level 2: Dragged Along (Dependence)Keeping the calves still. He cannot save the one he follows. There is no gladness in his heart. One wants to stop but is pulled along by the undertow of others.
- Level 3: Rigidity (Blockage)Keeping the hips still. The sacrum stiffens. Dangerous. The heart chokes. Forced calm leads to tension. The wrong focus.
- Level 4: Control (Centering)Keeping the torso still. No fault. Mastery of the entire system through conscious calm.
- Level 5: Mindfulness (Choice of Words)Keeping the jaws still. Words are well ordered. Regret vanishes. Speaking only when there is something to say. No wasted energy.
- Conclusion: Noble-Heartedness (Completion)Great-hearted keeping still. Good fortune. The perfect calm of the mind. You are the unshakable mountain.
