6. Conflict

Sung addresses the conflict that arises when two opposing interests or directions collide (heaven moves upward, water downward). It is about clarifying positions and avoiding escalation.

DisputeLegal Recourse

Conflict: you possess truthfulness but are held back. Staying in the middle brings good fortune; the end brings misfortune. It is beneficial to see the great man. It is not beneficial to cross the great water.

Clarification Dynamic

Sung teaches us that friction generates information. Conflict should be used to improve the system, not to destroy it.

Operative Resources

Excellent rhetorical skills and the wisdom to recognize when a retreat is more profitable than a victory.

System Blocks

Destructive self-righteousness – burning resources on a fight that creates no lasting value.

System-Hacks

Optimize your ability to handle conflict.

  • Nonviolent Communication: Use 'I-statements' to take the pressure off.
  • Future Audit: How important will this dispute still be in 5 years?

Image

Heaven and water move apart: the image of Conflict. So the noble one, in his dealings, gives thought to the beginning.

Shadow Challenge

Shadow: Self-Righteousness – The danger of getting hopelessly caught up in a conflict to satisfy the ego, even when the price for the system is too high.

Strategy

Stay truthful, but be ready to compromise. Find an impartial mediator ('the great man'). Don't fight to the bitter end.

The Lines

  • Beginning: Letting Go (Peaceful Ending)If one does not drag the matter out forever, there is a little talk. In the end good fortune comes. Do not prolong the conflict. A small clarification is enough.
  • Level 2: Retreat (Strategic Retreat)The opponent is stronger. Going home and yielding brings safety. Do not fight against superior strength.
  • Level 3: Tradition (Humility)Live on long-standing virtue. Danger; in the end good fortune comes. Stay steadfast in your character. Successes belong not to you alone but to the system.
  • Level 4: Insight (Turn for the Better)One is unable to fight. Turning back and bowing to fate brings good fortune. Recognizing one's own mistakes.
  • Level 5: Justice (Victory of Truth)Arguing one's case before the highest judge brings exalted good fortune. Your position is legitimate and will be upheld.
  • Conclusion: Pyrrhic Victory (Warning)Even if one should be granted a leather belt, before a single morning is out it is torn from him three times. Even if you win the lawsuit, the victory will be torn from you three times. A victory won through conflict does not last.
