The Earthly Branches in BaZi
BaZi (八字), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a classical Chinese personality and destiny system based on birth date and time. It uses two types of signs: the Heavenly Stems and the Earthly Branches. There are 12 Earthly Branches corresponding to the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
The Earthly Branches carry complex energy patterns, Yin/Yang qualities and Five Element assignments. They interact with each other through clashes, combinations, punishments and destructions.
The 6 Branch Clashes (Chong)
A clash (Chong) occurs when two directly opposing Earthly Branches meet. There are 6 classic clash pairs:
- Rat – Horse: Emotional turbulence, decision conflict
- Tiger – Monkey: Career turbulence, power struggles
- Dragon – Dog: Deep changes, spiritual crises and breakthroughs
- Snake – Pig: Conflicts between control and freedom
Branch Combinations
Combinations (He) create harmony between Earthly Branches. The main types are Triangle Combinations (San He) – three branches creating a strong Five Element pattern – and Six Harmonies (Liu He) – six pairs that work harmoniously together.
Significance for Chart Analysis
Understanding clashes and combinations is central to BaZi analysis. It reveals which life periods are particularly dynamic, which partnerships naturally harmonise and how annual energy interacts with your natal chart. Learn more in the BaZi overview.
FAQ
What does it mean if my day branch clashes with the current year branch?
This can indicate a turbulent but transformative phase. Changes in the area governed by the affected pillar are likely.
Are clashes always negative?
No. Clashes activate energy and can dissolve stagnation. Whether the energy manifests positively or negatively depends on the overall chart context.
Can I combine BaZi with other systems?
Yes. BaZi combines excellently with Astrology, Numerology and Human Design for a deeper picture of personality and destiny potential.
