BaZi Love Compatibility: How the Four Pillars Describe Partnership

Are we a good match? BaZi, the Chinese teaching of the four pillars, doesn't answer that question with a score. A relationship reading places the birth charts of two people side by side and asks how their elements and signs interact: where they support each other, where they rub against each other and where a special attraction arises.

That takes more than the animal sign. The well-known compatibility of the Chinese animal signs looks only at the year of birth; BaZi considers all eight characters, above all the day pillar. BaZi is a sober system in this respect: it knows no predestined soulmate, and it describes tendencies, not fate. How two people deal with their dynamic is up to them.

The Day Pillar: Day Master and Palace of Partnership

Each of the four pillars consists of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. For relationships, the day pillar matters most. Its Heavenly Stem is the Day Master, that is, you. Its Earthly Branch is considered the palace of partnership, also called the spouse palace: according to the teaching, it describes what you look for in a partnership and what dynamic you experience in it.

The palace is read through the stems hidden in its Earthly Branch, in relation to your Day Master. The reading goes roughly like this: if it carries the element that nourishes you, you long for backing and care. If it carries your own element, you look for equality and exchange on an equal footing. If it carries the element that controls you, you experience relationships as binding and demanding, sometimes also as pressure.

The Five Elements Between Two People

In the next step, the reading compares the Day Masters of both partners according to the two cycles of the five elements:

• Nourishing cycle (Sheng): wood feeds fire, fire feeds earth, earth feeds metal, metal feeds water, water feeds wood. If one Day Master nourishes the other, as wood does fire, support flows easily.
• Controlling cycle (Ke): wood controls earth, earth controls water, water controls fire, fire controls metal, metal controls wood. Such pairs experience intensity and friction; that can turn into growth or into a power struggle.
• Same element: quick understanding, but also competition.

This classification alone is too simple. According to the teaching, the strength of the Day Masters is decisive: a very strong wood doesn't need even more water to feed it, but rather metal to give it shape. A bond is considered harmonious when each brings the other some of the element that is missing in their chart.

Special attention goes to the five stem combinations: Jia and Ji, Yi and Geng, Bing and Xin, Ding and Ren, Wu and Gui. If the Day Masters of two people form such a pair, the tradition sees a strong mutual attraction in it.

If they clash (Chong), like Rat and Horse or Dragon and Dog, it points to friction and change. That is no sign of incompatibility, but it does point to recurring conflicts that call for conscious work. Partner Star and Peach Blossom

The Ten Gods show how someone experiences relationships. The classical teaching, which knows couples only as man and woman, reads wealth as the partner star for men, above all Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai), and the officer for women, above all the Direct Officer (Zheng Guan). The Direct Officer stands for reliability and order, the Seven Killings (Qi Sha) for passion, intensity and challenging partners. If the partner star is missing from a chart, that doesn't mean no partnership will come. The stars of expression color love life too: the Eating God (Shi Shen) stands for charm, enjoyment and lightness, the Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) for willfulness and a tendency to break conventions.

Among the special stars, the Shen Sha, the Peach Blossom (Tao Hua) is considered a sign of attraction, charm and popularity, not only in love. It is determined from the year or day branch and always falls on one of four branches: Rat, Rabbit, Horse or Rooster.

Time and Relationships

That is no prediction of whether and when you will marry.
