BaZi Da Yun: The Great Luck Period and Luck Pillars in Ten-Year Cycles

In BaZi, the birth chart with its four pillars describes a basic nature that doesn't change over a lifetime. A second layer is added to it, time: the Da Yun (大運), known in English as the great luck period or the luck pillars. These names all mean the same thing: a sequence of pillars, each of which sets the tone for ten years.

A vivid image: the birth chart is the ship, the luck pillar the wind that blows for a decade. It helps decide what comes easily and what takes effort; how you sail is up to you.

What a Luck Pillar Is

Every luck pillar is built like the pillars of the birth chart: a Heavenly Stem on top, an Earthly Branch below. It applies for ten years. According to a common rule of thumb, the stem shapes the first five years more, the branch the second five; other schools read the pillar as a whole. It is always read in relation to the birth chart, above all to the Day Master: which of the Ten Gods does the pillar bring, and does it strengthen elements the chart lacks or ones that are already present in excess?

How the Luck Pillars Are Calculated

The calculation follows three steps:

1. Direction: It depends on the Heavenly Stem of the birth year and on sex. Men born in a yang year and women born in a yin year count forward; men from a yin year and women from a yang year count backward. Yang years are those ending in an even digit, yin years those ending in an odd one; anyone born before the start of spring around 4 February belongs to the previous year. That is why the luck pillars need the person's sex as well as the birth data.
2. Sequence: The starting point is the month pillar. From there you move step by step through the cycle of sixty stem-branch pairs. If your month pillar is Bing Yin, the forward sequence is Ding Mao, Wu Chen, Ji Si and so on, the backward one Yi Chou, Jia Zi, Gui Hai.
3. Start: You count the days from birth to the next solar term that opens a BaZi month, or, for pillars running backward, back to the previous one. Three days correspond to one year of life, one day to four months. Each further luck pillar begins ten years after the one before.

An example: born around noon on 20 February 1984. The year is Jia Zi, a yang year, and the month pillar is Bing Yin. For a man, the luck pillars run forward: there are just under 14 days to the next solar term on 5 March, so the first luck pillar, Ding Mao, begins at a little over four and a half years, and Wu Chen ten years later. For a woman with the same birthday, they run backward: there are just under 16 days back to the start of spring on 4 February, so her first luck pillar, Yi Chou, begins at a little over five years.

Because a solar month has about thirty days, the first luck pillar always begins sometime between birth and the tenth year of life.

How to Read a Luck Pillar

In BaZi there are no luck pillars that are good or bad in themselves. What matters is the relationship to the chart: a pillar with a lot of water can be a burden for someone who already has too much water and nourishing for someone who lacks it. A pillar counts as favorable when it supplies the element that brings your chart into balance.

According to the teaching, each element gives a decade a basic color:

• Wood: growth, new projects, new beginnings
• Fire: visibility, encounters, enthusiasm
• Earth: stability, foundations, possessions
• Metal: clarity, structure, letting go
• Water: knowledge, retreat, inner work

What this color means for you only becomes clear from its relationship to your Day Master, that is, from the Ten Gods. If the pillar brings the element that nourishes your Day Master, learning and backing come to the fore; the element you control puts work, possessions and shaping things at the center; the element that controls you, responsibility and pressure; the element you produce, expression and creativity; your own element, independence and competition.

Luck Pillar and Current Year

Within each decade, every year also has its own pillar, in Chinese Liu Nian (流年), the “flowing year”. 2024, for example, was the year Jia Chen, the Wood Dragon. The luck pillar sets the frame of the decade, the pillar of the year the accents within it. A complete BaZi reading therefore reads three layers together: the birth chart, the current luck pillar and the year.

Not a Verdict but a Weather Pattern

Luck pillars are not verdicts of fate. According to the teaching, they describe the climate of a phase of life, not what happens. In demanding phases, the tradition recommends strengthening the element that does your chart good, for instance through colors, surroundings or activities, and planning important steps consciously. That is the art of living in the spirit of the teaching, not a promise.

How long does a Da Yun period last?

Each luck pillar applies for exactly ten years. Over a life of eighty to ninety years, that makes around eight to nine luck pillars in succession.

At what age does the first luck pillar begin?

Sometime between birth and the tenth year of life. What counts is the distance between the birth and the next or previous solar term: three days of distance make one year.

Are Da Yun, the great luck period and the luck pillars the same thing?
