Earthly Branch Combinations in BaZi: Hidden Forces in the Destiny Chart

In the BaZi system — also known as Four Pillars of Destiny — the earthly branches (Dizhi) are twelve Chinese signs corresponding to the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. But their significance goes far beyond the animal sign: earthly branches interact with each other, form combinations, and in doing so create new hidden elements that profoundly shape personality and life events.

Combinations between earthly branches are among the most important and most overlooked elements in BaZi analysis. They can weaken or strengthen visible elements in the chart, introduce entirely new forces, and explain why two people with similar birth times take completely different life paths.

The Six Harmonic Combinations (Liu He)

The Liu He — the six harmonic combinations — arise between two specific earthly branches and generate a new element. These pairs attract each other and create harmony and connection:

  • Rat (Zi) + Ox (Chou) → Earth
  • Tiger (Yin) + Pig (Hai) → Wood
  • Rabbit (Mao) + Dog (Xu) → Fire
  • Dragon (Chen) + Rooster (You) → Metal
  • Snake (Si) + Monkey (Shen) → Water
  • Horse (Wu) + Goat (Wei) → Fire

When two of these earthly branches appear in your four pillars, a strong bond forms between those positions. In life this shows as attraction to certain life areas, relationships, or seasons in which a strong activation takes place.

The Three Harmony Frames (San He)

Even more powerful than Liu He are the San He — triple combinations. They arise between three earthly branches that together create an element at full strength:

  • Rat + Dragon + Monkey → Water Frame
  • Tiger + Horse + Dog → Fire Frame
  • Pig + Rabbit + Goat → Wood Frame
  • Snake + Rooster + Ox → Metal Frame

A San He frame in a birth chart shows a person fundamentally dominated by one element. A complete Water Frame typically describes a highly intuitive, adaptable person — sometimes to the point where structure and boundaries become difficult.

Earthly Branch Clashes (Chong) as the Counterpart

Alongside combinations exist Chong — direct clashes between opposing earthly branches. These create not harmony but friction and transformation. Classic clash pairs include Rat ↔ Horse (Water vs. Fire) and Tiger ↔ Monkey (Wood vs. Metal). People with clashes in their four pillars often experience strong upheavals in specific life phases.

How Combinations Are Used in Personality Analysis

An experienced BaZi analyst reads not just individual elements but the dynamics between them. Combinations can strengthen or weaken the Day Master, introduce missing elements, and explain the timing of life events. UmbraLux combines BaZi with numerology and astrology for a holistic view of these patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions about BaZi Earthly Branch Combinations

What are earthly branches in BaZi?

Earthly branches are the twelve Chinese animal signs in their BaZi function. Each of the four pillars (hour, day, month, year) has one earthly branch. They contain hidden heavenly stems and interact through combinations and clashes.

What happens when earthly branches combine?

Two or three branches together can create a new element (Liu He, San He). The newly formed element strengthens in the chart and influences character and life events.

Are combinations always positive?

Not necessarily. If the combination produces an unfavorable element — one that weakens the Day Master — a combination can bring challenges. Context is always decisive.

How do I find combinations in my chart?

You first need your complete BaZi chart with all four pillars and their earthly branches. A BaZi analyst or an app like UmbraLux can then show you which combination patterns are active.
