What is the Human Design Incarnation Cross?

In Human Design, the Incarnation Cross is a person's overarching life theme, often called their life's purpose. It consists of four gates: the Sun and Earth at your birth and the Sun and Earth about three months earlier. You find it in your Human Design chart, which is calculated from your date, time and place of birth.

The cross stands above type, strategy and authority: it does not describe how you make decisions, but what your life revolves around as a whole. The gates of the Sun and Earth at the time of birth form the conscious Personality; the gates of the Sun and Earth 88 degrees of solar arc before birth form the unconscious Design. Depending on the season, the Sun takes 86 to 92 days to cover these 88 degrees, so the Design lies about three months before birth.

The result is four gates forming a cross — the Incarnation Cross. There are 192 possible crosses in the Human Design system, 64 of each of three kinds: Right Angle Crosses, Juxtaposition Crosses and Left Angle Crosses. Which kind you have follows from your profile.

How to find your Incarnation Cross

Have your birth data ready: the date, the most exact time you can get and the place of your birth.
Calculate your chart: a Human Design chart determines which gate the Sun was in at your birth and which gate it was in 88 degrees earlier. The Earth always stands exactly opposite the Sun. In the UmbraLux app this happens when you create your profile.
Read the name and formula: a chart names the cross with its kind, its name and four numbers, such as “Right Angle Cross of Penetration (57/51 | 53/54)”. The two numbers before the bar are the gates of your Personality Sun and Personality Earth, the two after it the gates of the Design Sun and Design Earth.
Check the kind by your profile: your profile decides whether you have a Right Angle, a Juxtaposition or a Left Angle Cross (see below).
Look it up: all 192 crosses with their gates are listed in the overview of the Incarnation Crosses. The Sun carries the main theme; each of the four gates also has its own entry, such as Gate 57.

The three kinds of Incarnation Crosses

Right Angle Crosses: personal destiny

Seven of the twelve profiles belong to a Right Angle Cross: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. Their path is considered a personal destiny: life revolves mainly around one's own development.

Juxtaposition Crosses: fixed fate

Only the 4/1 profile has a Juxtaposition Cross. It is considered a fixed fate: a path of its own that stands like a bridge between personal and transpersonal destiny.

Left Angle Crosses: transpersonal destiny

The profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 have a Left Angle Cross. Their path is considered transpersonal: it is closely bound up with other people, and the cross is fulfilled in the encounter with them.

The four quarters

Whatever its kind, every cross lies in one of the four quarters of the Human Design wheel, depending on the gate of your Personality Sun. Each quarter spans 16 gates and gives the cross its basic theme:

Quarter of Initiation: purpose fulfilled through the mind, through insight and the question of the meaning of life.
Quarter of Civilization: purpose fulfilled through form, through building and nurturing community and society.
Quarter of Duality: purpose fulfilled through bonding, through relationship and partnership.
Quarter of Mutation: purpose fulfilled through transformation, through change and renewal.

How to read your Incarnation Cross

The Incarnation Cross is defined by its four gates. Each gate corresponds to an I Ching hexagram and carries a specific energy. The combination of the four gates creates the specific theme of your Incarnation Cross.

Example: in the Right Angle Cross of Penetration with the formula 57/51 | 53/54, the Personality Sun is in Gate 57 and the Earth opposite it in Gate 51; the Design Sun is in Gate 53, the Design Earth in Gate 54. The cross describes a person whose intuition (57) penetrates situations in the moment and who, with the courage to shock (51), the power to begin (53) and ambition (54), acts on what they recognize in the moment.

Important: the Cross is not a task to be completed — it is an energy that wants to be lived. The more someone follows their strategy and authority, the more naturally the Cross unfolds.

Incarnation Cross and life path

Your Incarnation Cross accompanies you all your life, but according to the teaching of Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, it matures in stages. In youth and early adulthood it is often not yet conscious. The Saturn Return around 29 marks the beginning of adult life. In the roughly 20 years until the Chiron Return around 50, the cross is “planted”: you begin to live its theme and root it in the world step by step. After that, it can fully unfold.
