Human Design Conditioning: How Foreign Energies Shape Us

What Does Conditioning Mean in Human Design?
Conditioning in Human Design describes the process by which the open (white) centers in your Bodygraph absorb foreign energies, amplify them, and pass them off as your own. Every open center is a place where you absorb conditioning from outside — from other people, society, your family and culture.
In the Human Design system, every person has defined (colored) and undefined (open) centers. Defined centers are fixed, consistent and radiate energy outward. Open centers receive and amplify the energies of others — and this makes them the source of both conditioning and great wisdom.
Open Centers as Gateways to Conditioning
When a center is open, it means:
- You absorb others' energy in this area more intensely
- You amplify this energy — often experiencing it more strongly than the person it comes from
- You may believe this energy is your own, even though it is conditioned
- You develop beliefs based on this absorbed energy
The Not-Self: When Conditioning Becomes Identity
Human Design speaks of the Not-Self theme: the characteristic pain each type experiences when living against their strategy and authority. This Not-Self theme is often the result of deeply rooted conditioning.
When you as a Generator constantly initiate things that your Sacral Center actually rejects — you are living from the Not-Self. The result: frustration, exhaustion, the feeling of being in the wrong place.
What Is Deconditioning?
Deconditioning is the process by which you learn to distinguish the absorbed foreign energies from your own true nature. Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, spoke of a seven-year process — the timeframe in which every cell in the body is renewed and the system recalibrates.
Deconditioning does not mean blocking all outside influences. It means consciously noticing them: "This energy comes from outside. Is it really mine?" This question, asked repeatedly, fundamentally changes the relationship to one's own identity.
FAQ: Human Design Conditioning
What is an open center in Human Design?
An open (undefined) center is colored white in your Bodygraph. It is not a fixed energy center, but a flexible receiver: it absorbs others' energy, amplifies it, and reflects it back. This makes open centers places of deep wisdom — but also places of conditioning.
How long does deconditioning take?
Ra Uru Hu spoke of approximately seven years for deep deconditioning. This is not a fixed timeframe but a guideline: it takes time to recognize deeply rooted patterns and develop new, authentic responses.
Can one fully decondition?
Complete freedom from conditioning may not be the goal. More important is awareness: noticing when energy comes from outside, and being able to choose how to relate to it — rather than being unconsciously driven by it.
What is the difference between an open and defined center?
A defined center is colored in your Bodygraph and consistently radiates energy outward — it is a fixed part of your identity. An open center is white, receives energy from outside and is therefore variable and influenced by others.
