What is Tiphareth in Kabbalah?

Tiphareth (Hebrew: תִּפאֶרֶת, "Beauty") is the sixth of the ten Sephiroth on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Located at the geometric center of the tree – flanked by Chesed (Grace) and Gevurah (Strength), with Kether (Crown) above and Yesod (Foundation) below – Tiphareth is literally the heart of the entire system.

Where Kether represents pure being and Chokhmah the primal thought, Tiphareth brings both into a living, harmonious form. Here transcendence and humanity meet.

The Meaning of Tiphareth

Tiphareth embodies these qualities:

  • Beauty (Tiferet): Not surface aesthetics, but the beauty of balance – all parts working together as a harmonious whole
  • Self-awareness: In Tiphareth, the conscious self emerges – the I that is aware of itself, not as ego-illusion, but as expression of the divine spark
  • The Heart: Tiphareth corresponds to the heart in the human body – the center through which all energy flows
  • Christ consciousness: In many Kabbalistic schools, Tiphareth corresponds to the consciousness of the redeemer – the middle path between abundance and severity

Tiphareth and the Middle Pillar

On the Tree of Life, Kether, Tiphareth, Yesod and Malkuth form the Middle Pillar – the central path of balance. Tiphareth is the station where the human being finds their path from pure matter (Malkuth) to the divine source (Kether). It is the place of conscious mediation.

Tiphareth in Astrological Kabbalah

In Kabbalistic astrology, Tiphareth is assigned to the Sun. The Sun in the birth chart shows the conscious self, the life purpose and the way we express ourselves – all qualities anchored at the heart of the Tree of Life.

FAQ: Kabbalah Tiphareth

What part of the body corresponds to Tiphareth?

Tiphareth corresponds to the heart and solar plexus – the center of the physical body through which life-sustaining energy flows. In Kabbalistic body symbolism, the heart is the seat of highest consciousness.

What is the difference between Tiphareth and Kether?

Kether is pure being – unmanifested, incomprehensible, beyond form. Tiphareth is being that becomes conscious of itself – it contains self-awareness and the capacity for reflection. Kether is origin; Tiphareth is heart.
