32. Duration
Heng (Duration) shows thunder and wind as a pair. They are constantly in motion, but their relationship is constant. That is the secret of 'consistency': True duration does not come from rigidity, but from constant adaptation and renewal. It is about long-term thinking, marriages, habits, and grit (staying power). Those who give up at the first resistance build nothing that lasts. Stick with it, but stay flexible.
Duration. Success. No fault. Persistence is beneficial. It is beneficial to go somewhere.
Sustainability
Heng teaches the paradox of stability: Only what changes can endure.
Operative Resources
Discipline. The ability to do things even when one isn't in the mood.
System Blocks
Inconsistency – Constantly changing direction before results become visible.
System-Hacks
Keep it running.
- Habit Chain: Keep a habit (e.g., Duolingo, meditation) alive.
- Reaffirmation: Renew your yes to a partner/project today.
Image
Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. So the noble one stands fast and does not alter course.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Routine trap – Boredom, stagnation, or holding on to forms that have long been dead ('zombie projects').
Strategy
Stick with it! Don't give up. Establish rhythms and routines. Maintain what exists through small innovations (kaizen).
The Lines
- Beginning: Force (Haste)Wanting to force duration. Misfortune. Nothing that would be beneficial. Whoever says 'forever' too quickly or wants too much fails. Overzealousness.
- Level 2: Balance (Equilibrium)Regret vanishes. One finds the right balance between duration and change.
- Level 3: Fickleness (Instability)He gives his virtue no duration. One reaps shame. A lack of consistency leads to a loss of respect.
- Level 4: Emptiness (Futility)The field holds no game. Whoever hunts in the wrong place will find nothing, no matter how long he waits. Wrong strategy.
- Level 5: Flexibility (Rigidity)Lasting virtue through persistence. Good fortune for the woman, misfortune for the man. Holding one-sidedly to tradition can be confining. Adaptation is needed.
- Conclusion: Restlessness (Chaos)Unrest as a permanent state. Misfortune. Whoever is always seeking something new finds neither rest nor duration. Restlessness.
