33. Retreat
Dun (Retreat) shows the mountain under heaven. Heaven withdraws to gain distance. This is not a cowardly retreat, but a strategic chess move. 'Dun' describes the art of detaching: One withdraws one's energy from a toxic or hopeless situation. It is not the time for direct confrontation. The hostile forces are on the rise. Fighting now would be suicide. The sage withdraws – not out of fear, but to protect his resources ('Whoever yields today can fight again tomorrow').
Retreat. Success. In small things, persistence is beneficial.
Distance Management
Dun teaches that retreat is not a defeat, but often the only way to stay in control.
Operative Resources
Boundaries. The ability to say 'no' and to draw the line.
System Blocks
Ego attachment – Holding on to lost causes out of false pride.

Image
Beneath heaven is the mountain: the image of Retreat. So the noble one keeps the petty person at a distance through dignity, not through anger.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Pride – Insisting on fighting even though one is outmatched. Or: Escapism (fleeing from responsibility).
Strategy
Withdraw. Create distance. Don't get entangled in discussions. Preserve your dignity and your energy for later.
The Lines
- Beginning: Danger (Delay)Retreat at the tail. That is dangerous. You want to get away but are held back. Waited too long.
- Level 2: Binding (Firmness)He holds him firmly with yellow ox leather. No one is able to wrench him free. You hold on to your principles (or a noble goal), even in retreat. Loyalty.
- Level 3: Dead Weight (Hindrance)Hindered retreat. That is distressing and dangerous. To keep people as servants and maids brings good fortune. You carry ballast that keeps you from leaving (e.g., emotional ties).
- Level 4: Freedom (Liberation)Free retreat. Good fortune for the noble one, decline for the petty person. You can let go and leave. That is liberating.
- Level 5: Sovereignty (Dignity)Amicable retreat. Persistence brings good fortune. You part on good terms, without leaving scorched earth behind.
- Conclusion: Peace (Supreme Good Fortune)Serene retreat. Everything is beneficial. You have completed the retreat and now enjoy your freedom.
