38. Opposition
K'uei (Opposition) shows fire striving upward and the lake pulling downward. Two different wills in the same house. It is the image of misunderstandings, otherness, and opposition. But: Diversity is strength! Where everyone thinks alike, nothing new arises. Tension generates energy. This hexagram teaches a creative way of dealing with conflict: One does not have to make everything the same. One can be different and still work together ('unity in diversity').
Opposition. Good fortune in small things.
Otherness
K'uei teaches us that harmony does not mean sameness. A chord needs different notes.
Operative Resources
Synthesis. The ability to combine opposites into something new.
System Blocks
Intolerance – The inability to accept other points of view as valid.
System-Hacks
Use the contrast.
- Debate: Deliberately seek out a conversation with someone who disagrees with you.
- Mix Opposites: Combine two things that 'supposedly' don't go together.
Image
Fire above, the lake below: the image of Opposition. So the noble one remains an individual even in togetherness.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Isolation – The feeling of being a stranger. Or the compulsive attempt to convert others (missionary zeal).
Strategy
Seek common ground in the difference. Respect otherness. Do not force unity. Use the tension creatively.
The Lines
- Beginning: Composure (Self-Worth)Regret vanishes. Should you lose your horse, do not chase it; it comes back by itself. When you see bad people, beware of mistakes. Run after no one.
- Level 2: Encounter (Chance)One encounters one's lord in a narrow lane. No fault. A chance but important meeting. Communication is possible when a meeting cannot be avoided.
- Level 3: Misunderstanding (Clarification)One sees the cart hauled back, the cattle held fast. The man's hair and nose are cut off. A poor start, but a good ending. Nasty misunderstandings are cleared up.
- Level 4: Allies (Connection)Alone in opposition. One meets a stalwart man. Loyalty keeps you together. Danger, but no fault. Far from home you find a kindred spirit.
- Level 5: Breakthrough (Depth)Regret vanishes. The companion bites through the skin. If one goes, one does not err. A deep bond that cuts through superficialities.
- Conclusion: Projection (Insight)Alone in opposition. One sees a pig caked in filth, a cart full of ghosts. First one bends the bow, then one sets the bow down. It is no robber, it is a suitor. Fear clouds your vision.
