39. Obstruction
Chien (Obstruction) shows water on the mountain. An abyss in front, a mountain behind. Nothing moves anymore. You're stuck. It is the classic 'wall' one runs into. What to do? Don't try to go through the wall headfirst! The I Ching advises turning back and changing course. When the outer world is blocked, the path inward is open. Use the pause to strengthen your character and to seek allies. An obstacle is not a stop sign, but a signpost pointing in a new direction.
Obstruction. The southwest is beneficial (community). The northeast is not beneficial (solitude). It is beneficial to see the great man.
Problem-Solving
Chien is the moment when Plan A fails. It forces us to become more creative and develop a Plan B.
Operative Resources
Self-reflection. The courage to see one's own part in the problem.
System Blocks
Stubbornness – Constantly repeating actions that don't work.
System-Hacks
Turn around.
- Change of Course: Today, change a strategy that isn't working.
- Consultation: Ask someone who has already solved the problem for advice.
Image
On the mountain is water: the image of Obstruction. So the noble one turns inward and builds his character.
Shadow Challenge
Shadow: Frustration – Anger, pointless assaults on the impossible, or a victim attitude ('Why me?').
Strategy
Stop. Turn back. Look for the fault (or the solution) in yourself. Get help (mentors). Wait for the right moment.
The Lines
- Beginning: Waiting (Patience)Going brings obstruction; coming earns praise. Stay where you are. Wait and see. That is wiser than blind busyness.
- Level 2: Service (Duty)The king's servant faces obstruction after obstruction. Not through his own doing. You fight for a higher cause and take on other people's burdens. Honorable.
- Level 3: Return (Safety)Going brings obstruction; coming brings a return. You go back to your base (family/team). There you are safe.
- Level 4: Cooperation (Network)Going brings obstruction; coming brings connection. You enlist allies.
- Level 5: Help (Rescue)Amid the very greatest obstructions, friends arrive. Help in the direst need. You do not stand alone.
- Conclusion: Guidance (Solution)Going brings obstruction; coming brings great good fortune. It is beneficial to see the great man. Find yourself a mentor/expert.
