Kabbalah Chokmah (Chokhmah): The Sephirah of Divine Wisdom

Chokmah (Hebrew חָכְמָה, “wisdom”; also spelled Chokhmah, Chochmah or Chochma) is the second sephirah of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It does not mean learned knowledge but wisdom as the first flash of insight: what you suddenly know before you can say how you know it. In Kabbalah it is regarded as the beginning of creation: the first force to emerge from Keter.

What Does Chokmah Mean?

The Hebrew word chokmah simply means “wisdom”. Kabbalah reads more into it: an old interpretation splits it into “koach mah”, the “power of what”, a potential that is not yet defined. Chokmah is insight before it becomes a particular thought: the whole at a glance, still without parts.

Kabbalah relates even the first word of the Bible, “In the beginning” (Bereshit), to Chokmah: wisdom is the beginning from which everything else emerges. In the imagery of Lurianic Kabbalah, Chokmah is Abba, the father, and in the teaching of the five levels of the soul it corresponds to Chayah, the living soul. In the divine name YHVH it is represented by the Yod, the smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet, hardly more than a point.

Chokmah on the Tree of Life

Chokmah carries the number 2, and with it duality begins. Keter is unity without a counterpart; in Chokmah, something steps out of this unity for the first time, and with that, movement, direction and polarity begin. Where Keter is perfect stillness, the tradition describes Chokmah as the first breath after it: dynamic, expanding and still without a goal.

On the tree, Chokmah stands at the top of the right pillar, the Pillar of Mercy. Above it lies Keter, opposite it on the left pillar Binah, below it Chesed, loving-kindness. With Keter and Binah, Chokmah forms the upper triangle of the tree, the level before any tangible form.

In the Hermetic arrangement, four paths connect Chokmah with the tree: Aleph with Keter, Daleth with Binah, He with Tiphereth and Vav with Chesed. This tradition draws the path of creation through all ten sephiroth as a lightning flash, and Chokmah is its first station after Keter: from unity through the first impulse to the first form in Binah.

Chokmah and Binah: Father and Mother

Chokmah and Binah are regarded as the first pair of the Tree of Life. Chokmah is the father: giving, outpouring, unformed. Binah is the mother: receiving, ordering, form-giving. Chokmah is the seed, Binah the womb; Chokmah is the lightning, Binah the book in which it finds words.

Neither can do without the other. Wisdom without understanding remains a flash that fizzles out; understanding without wisdom has nothing to shape. Where the two unite, according to the teaching, Da'at, knowledge, arises. The Hasidic movement Chabad takes its name from exactly these three: Chochmah, Binah and Da'at.

Symbols and Correspondences

The number and the divine name come from Jewish Kabbalah; the other correspondences come from the Hermetic tradition, above all from the Golden Dawn:

The zodiac suits the nature of Chokmah: it contains all twelve signs at once, the whole pattern before it breaks down into individual forces. The attribution of the outer planets, by contrast, is recent and not uniform.
