Life path 11 is the first of the master numbers in numerology. You have it when the digit sums of the day, month and year of your birth add up to 11 (or to 29, 38, 47 … whose digit sum is 11). It is not reduced to 2 but read as a number of its own: in numerological teaching, the number of intuition, inspiration and high inner tension. Among people born from 1940 to 2009, about one in fifteen has it by the way UmbraLux calculates.

What master number 11 means

11 is a double 1. The 1 stands for independence, leadership and pioneering spirit; doubled, it creates a high inner tension. Where master numbers come from

The life path number belongs to modern, so-called Pythagorean numerology. It has little to do with Pythagoras himself: it arose in the United States around 1900. Its founder is considered to be Sarah Joanna Dennis Balliett, who published books on "number vibration" as Mrs. L. Dow Balliett from 1904. The master number system, in which 11 and 22 are not reduced further, is also credited to her.

Her students made the method known: Florence Campbell with Your Days Are Numbered (1931), Juno Jordan with Numerology: The Romance in Your Name. These early textbooks have two master numbers, 11 and 22. Many numerologists today add 33, and so does UmbraLux. None of these meanings is scientifically proven; numerology is a system of interpretation, not a measurement.

How life path 11 comes about

For the life path number, take the digit sum of the day, month and year of your birth separately, add the three values and take the digit sum again. If 11, 22 or 33 appears along the way, the master number stays. That already applies to the parts: a birthday on the 11th or 29th counts as 11, November as 11, a year such as 2009 as 11.

Example: 5 March 1992. Day: 5. Month: 3. Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3. Sum: 5 + 3 + 3 = 11. The 11 is not reduced further to 2; the life path number is 11.

Second example: 29 September 1980. Day: 2 + 9 = 11, it stays. Month: 9. Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18, then 9. Sum: 11 + 9 + 9 = 29, digit sum 11. The life path number is 11.

All digits at once: for 1 January 1980 the method above gives 1 + 1 + 9 = 11, the sum of all digits 20 and so 2.
Parts always single digits: whoever turns a day of 11 straight into 2 gets 2 + 2 + 7 = 11 for 11 February 1987. UmbraLux keeps the day as 11 and calculates 11 + 2 + 7 = 20, so 2.

How common is life path 11?

We ran every date from 1 January 1940 to 31 December 2009 through the UmbraLux app's calculation function, 25,568 days. The result:

So 11 is rarer than life paths 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 (about 11.1% each) but more common than the plain 2 (4.6%), because many of the dates that would otherwise give 2 stay as 11. For comparison: 22 has 3.1%, 33 0.9%. The figure depends heavily on the method; 11 is not "very rare", as is often claimed.

Strengths of master number 11

Intuition: 11 perceives what others overlook, often before it is said.
Empathy: it senses moods and tensions and can feel deeply with others.
Inspiration: it sees possibilities and connections no one has named yet and can move others with them.

The shadow side: high tension and self-doubt

The flip side of this sensitivity, in numerological interpretation, is inner tension. 11 takes in impressions more intensely than others, and that can show as overstimulation, nervousness and exhaustion. Because 1 + 1 = 2, 11 carries the themes of life path 2: relationship, harmony, sensitivity. The 2 lives them more calmly, diplomatically and adaptively. The 11 carries the same theme with more tension and a stronger urge to act outward with its perception. Many numerologists therefore write it as 11/2: the 2 is its base, the 11 its potential.
