Pythagorean Square: How to Calculate and Read It

The Pythagorean square is a numerological 3×3 grid built from your birth date: write out every digit of the day, month and year, drop the zeros, and enter each digit from 1 to 9 in its cell as often as it occurs. Each cell stands for a quality, such as 1 for willpower or 9 for memory. In numerological teaching, full cells show strong talents and empty cells show areas to develop.

What Is the Pythagorean Square?

The Pythagorean square (also called the psychomatrix or Pythagorean birth chart) sorts the digits of your birth date into nine cells. Unlike the life path number, which reduces everything to a single number, it shows which digits occur, how often, and which are missing. The name refers to Pythagoras, to whom number mysticism is traditionally attributed; the grid itself is a modern method of 20th-century numerology. It is especially widespread in Russian-speaking countries as the psychomatrix.

It is not the same as the Chinese Lo Shu square, a magic square with the fixed order 4-9-2 / 3-5-7 / 8-1-6 in which every line adds up to 15. Some schools enter the birth date into that grid as well; the cells then sit elsewhere and the lines mean something else.

How Do I Calculate My Pythagorean Square?

1. Write out your full birth date: day, month and four-digit year.
2. Split it into single digits and drop all zeros.
3. Count how often each digit from 1 to 9 occurs.
4. Enter each digit that many times in its cell. The cells form three columns: 1-2-3, 4-5-6 and 7-8-9.

Example: 15 March 1990 (15.03.1990). The digits are 1, 5, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 0. Without the zeros: two 1s, one 3, one 5, two 9s. Cells 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 stay empty.

Read as: a clear will (11), memory and intellect strongly emphasised (99), and the full 1-5-9 diagonal. In numerological teaching, the empty cells 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are the areas life asks you to develop. Only the digits of the date go into the grid; your name and birth time play no part.

What Do the Nine Cells Mean?

• Cell 1: willpower and strength of character. Many 1s show a strong will of your own; no 1 shows uncertainty in standing up for your view.
• Cell 2: life energy and sensitivity, receptiveness to other people's moods.
• Cell 3: sense of order and thirst for knowledge.
• Cell 4: health and pragmatism, the connection to the body and to what is feasible.
• Cell 5: intuition, the "logic of the heart". The 5 sits in the centre and joins every line that runs through it.
• Cell 6: devotion and responsibility, the readiness to stand up for something or someone.
• Cell 7: luck and protection, the ability to learn from experience.
• Cell 8: sense of duty and justice.
• Cell 9: memory and intellect. Everyone born in the 20th century has at least one 9 through the "19".

What Do Missing Numbers Mean?

In numerological teaching, a missing number does not mean the quality is absent; it is not innate and wants to be developed. A missing 4, for example, means order and body awareness do not come by themselves, but life often brings situations that call for exactly that. Since a date has at most eight digits, some cells are almost always empty; that is the normal case, not a lack.

The Lines of the Pythagorean Square

If all three numbers of a line are present, the line counts as strong; if all three are missing, as a theme to develop. The names come from the Western reading of the birth chart (for example David A. Phillips, who calls them "arrows"). They belong to the numbers, not to their position in the picture:

• 3-6-9: the mental plane: thinking, imagination, memory.
• 2-5-8: the emotional plane: sensitivity and intuition.
• 1-4-7: the physical, practical plane: drive and getting things done.
• 1-2-3: the plane of thought and planning.
• 4-5-6: the plane of will.
• 7-8-9: the plane of action.
• Diagonal 1-5-9: determination and persistence.
• Diagonal 3-5-7: compassion and spirituality.

In the 15.03.1990 example only the 1-5-9 diagonal is complete; the emotional plane (2-5-8) and the practical plane (1-4-7) are thinly filled.
