Maya Solar Seal Ix: White Wizard and Jaguar – Presence and Integrity

Ix (pronounced “eesh”) is the 14th of the 20 solar seals in the Maya calendar Tzolkin. In the Dreamspell, whose count UmbraLux uses, it is called the White Wizard (Ix); in the traditional lore it is the sign of the jaguar. Both images tell of a quiet power that comes from presence, not from loudness.
If you were born on an Ix day, you carry the White Wizard as the solar seal in your kin, your galactic signature. According to the Dreamspell, the seal describes which quality you bring into the world; the tone it is paired with shows how you express it.
White Wizard and Jaguar: The Two Names of Ix
The name White Wizard comes from the Dreamspell, a modern system by the American José Argüelles that many Maya readings follow today. It gives every seal a color: red initiates, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. There, white also stands for the north. Ix therefore belongs to the seals that clarify and purify what has been begun.
Ix is the Yucatec name of the day sign, and in the tradition it is the sign of the jaguar: among the K'iche' in Guatemala the day is called I'x, in the Aztec calendar Ocelotl, the word for jaguar. In Mesoamerica the jaguar is regarded as an animal of the night and of power, one that sees in the dark. The reading turns this into an image for Ix: inner knowing instead of outer confirmation.
Important for your own seal: the Dreamspell count differs from the traditional day count still kept in the highlands of Guatemala today. The same date of birth can fall on a different sign there. The ancient Maya did not know the Dreamspell; it is a modern reading of their 260-day calendar.
What the White Wizard Means
In the Dreamspell every seal carries three keywords. For the White Wizard they are the power of timelessness, the action of enchanting and the essence of receptivity. The UmbraLux library sums the seal up under the heading of integrity: real influence arises where will and being agree, not through manipulation. The wizard works from presence in the now; he is the seer who perceives the invisible within the visible.
The reading describes people with this seal like this:
- Presence: they are fully with one thing and sense what lies beneath the surface: moods, the unspoken, hidden patterns.
- Integrity: an inner compass guided by values, not by other people's applause.
- Receptivity: they can listen and let things happen instead of constantly intervening.
- Groundedness: for all their sense of mystery, they stay connected to the tangible world.
- Protection: like the jaguar, they guard what matters to them, people as well as places.
Shadow and Growth
The White Wizard's shadow is considered to be the misuse of one's own power: manipulation, doubt about one's own influence and a lack of honesty with oneself. Whoever knows their influence is tempted to force it. And when reality gets too loud, escaping into fantasy worlds becomes tempting.
There are three further themes as well:
- Withdrawal: whoever perceives a lot quickly feels like a stranger among people and withdraws until real closeness becomes difficult.
- Overstimulation: in loud, hectic surroundings the fine perception becomes a burden. Silence and clear boundaries are then not a weakness but self-care.
- Secrecy: Ix often knows more than it says. To others this can easily seem distant or arrogant.
Growth lies in letting go of control: not forcing but allowing, and directing your own will towards what really matters to you. Integrity here also means staying honest with yourself.
Ix in the Tzolkin: Tone, Kin and Wavespell
In the 260-day calendar Ix returns every 20 days, each time with a different one of the 13 galactic tones. This gives 13 kin with the White Wizard. Kin 14, the White Magnetic Wizard, opens the wavespell of the White Wizard, the second of the 20 wavespells in the Tzolkin (kin 14 to 26). With kin 234, the White Wizard in tone 13, the wavespell of the White Wind ends.
Ix is also one of the four year bearers. In Yucatán at the time of the Spanish conquest, every year began with one of four day signs, Kan, Muluc, Ix or Cauac, and was named after it. The Dreamspell's 13 Moon calendar, too, names its years after the Yellow Seed, Red Moon, White Wizard and Blue Storm.
Ix in Everyday Life
Whether Ix is your birth seal or you want to work with its quality on an Ix day, these prompts from the reading can help:
- Take a moment of silence every day in which you don't have to do or decide anything.
- Practice single-tasking: one thing at a time, with your full attention.
- Listen without already formulating your answer inside.
- Act when you feel a clear inner resonance, and trust your perception even when it can't be explained right away.
- Write down your dreams and pay attention to images that recur.
- Ask yourself in the evening: Where did I try to force something today instead of trusting? Where can I bring more integrity into what I do?
