Maya Solar Seal Muluc: Red Moon and Water – Feelings in Flow

Muluc (also spelled Muluk) is the ninth of the 20 solar seals in the Maya calendar Tzolkin. In the Dreamspell, whose count UmbraLux uses, it is called the Red Moon (Muluc); in the traditional lore it stands for water. Moon and water belong together: both stand for feelings, for rhythm and for whatever wants to keep moving.
If you were born on a Muluc day, you carry the Red Moon as the solar seal in your kin, your galactic signature. According to the Dreamspell, the seal describes which quality you bring into the world; the tone it is paired with shows how you express it.
Red Moon and Water: The Two Names of Muluc
The name Red Moon comes from the Dreamspell, a modern system by the American José Argüelles that many Maya readings follow today. It gives every seal a color: red initiates, white refines, blue transforms, yellow ripens. There, red also stands for the east. Muluc therefore belongs to the seals that set something in motion.
Muluc is the Yucatec name of the day sign, and in the tradition it is linked with water; in the Aztec calendar the day is called Atl, water. Among the K'iche' in Guatemala it is called Toj, which can be translated as gift or payment. This is where the motif of the offering in some readings comes from, not as a painful sacrifice but as devotion: freely giving something precious.
Important for your own seal: the Dreamspell count differs from the traditional day count still kept in the highlands of Guatemala today. The same date of birth can fall on a different sign there. The ancient Maya did not know the Dreamspell; it is a modern reading of their 260-day calendar.
What the Red Moon Means
In the Dreamspell every seal carries three keywords. For the Red Moon they are the power of universal water, the action of purifying and the essence of flow. The UmbraLux library sums the seal up under the heading of flow: feelings may flow, what is stuck comes loose, and you move with the rhythm of your surroundings instead of working against it. Purifying is an image for inner clearing here.
The reading describes people with this seal like this:
- Emotional depth: they feel intensely and grasp emotional truths beneath the surface.
- Intuition: they sense moods and atmospheres before they can put them into words.
- Adaptability: like water, they find a way around obstacles.
- Generosity: giving comes easily to them, sometimes too easily.
- A sense of rhythm: they follow inner cycles rather than rigid plans and find an outlet in art, music or writing.
Shadow and Growth
The Red Moon's shadow is considered to be the blockage: emotional flooding on the one hand, blocked feelings on the other. Both arise when the water can no longer flow.
There are three further themes as well:
- Overwhelm: a lot of sensitivity without clear boundaries is exhausting.
- Self-sacrifice: giving without recognition until nothing is left.
- Holding on: living through old hurts again and again instead of letting them go.
Growth lies in treating feelings as information rather than identity: they may come and go without you suppressing them or drowning in them. That includes allowing phases of vulnerability and setting boundaries.
Muluc in the Tzolkin: Tone, Kin and Wavespell
In the 260-day calendar Muluc returns every 20 days, each time with a different one of the 13 galactic tones. This gives 13 kin with the Red Moon. Kin 209, the Red Magnetic Moon, opens the wavespell of the Red Moon, the seventeenth of the 20 wavespells in the Tzolkin (kin 209 to 221). With kin 169, the Red Moon in tone 13, the wavespell of the Red Earth ends.
Muluc is also one of the four year bearers. In Yucatán at the time of the Spanish conquest, every year began with one of four day signs, Kan, Muluc, Ix or Cauac, and was named after it. The Dreamspell's 13 Moon calendar, too, names its years after the Yellow Seed, Red Moon, White Wizard and Blue Storm.
Muluc in Everyday Life
Whether Muluc is your birth seal or you want to work with its quality on a Muluc day, these prompts from the reading can help:
- Have a conversation you have been putting off for a long time.
- Spend time by the water, or turn a bath into a small ritual of letting go.
- Give your feelings an outlet: writing, painting, music.
- Let go of something that no longer suits you: an object, a habit, an old grudge.
- Ask yourself: What is building up inside me right now? What would I like to free myself from today?
