What Is the Soul Urge Number?
There are several core numbers in numerology. The best known is the life path number, calculated from the date of birth. Less well known but just as revealing is the soul urge number, also called heart's desire number. It describes what you really want on a deep, inner level: not what you show the world, but what your heart longs for.
How to Calculate the Soul Urge Number
The soul urge number is calculated from the vowels of your full birth name, that is, your first and family names as they appear on your birth certificate. Nicknames or a later married name don't count for it; according to numerological teaching, they change more how you come across.
The Pythagorean Alphabet
A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8.
Only the vowels count for the soul urge number: A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3 and usually also Y=7. You reduce the sum by adding its digits until a number from 1 to 9 remains. If 11, 22 or 33 comes up along the way, that master number stays.
Example
Name: ANNA MEIER. Vowels: A (1), A (1), E (5), I (9), E (5). Sum: 1 + 1 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 21, digit sum 2 + 1 = 3. The soul urge number is 3.
German umlauts and ß are written out: ä = ae, ö = oe, ü = ue, ß = ss, so Müller counts as Mueller; other accents count as their base letter (é = e). That is also how UmbraLux calculates. Some schools count only the base vowel. Pick one convention and stick with it.

The Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33
If a master number comes up, the heart's desire is considered especially intense: with 11 as a longing for inspiration and spiritual breadth, with 22 as the wish to make big visions tangible, with 33 as the need to give unconditionally. Many numerologists also read the reduced number (2, 4 or 6).
Soul Urge, Life Path and Expression Number
The soul urge number alone tells only part of the story. Numerology reads it together with two other core numbers:
- Life path number: from the date of birth; describes your path in life and its lessons.
- Soul urge number: from the vowels of the birth name; describes your innermost longing.
- Expression number: from all the letters of the birth name; describes your talents.
The consonants also give the personality number, which shows how you come across. When life path and soul urge fit well together, life feels coherent. When they are in tension, an inner conflict often arises between what you do and what you really want.
UmbraLux calculates your heart's desire from the name in your profile. If your birth name differs from your current surname, you can add it there. Ask Verus, your AI companion, about your soul number: he knows it and talks with you about the inner longing it describes. More on the life path number in the overview of life path numbers.
