Chronotype by Birth Time

The four chronotypes lion, bear, wolf and dolphin come from the sleep doctor Michael Breus, who finds them with a questionnaire on sleep and alertness. The UmbraLux app assigns you one of them symbolically, by your hour of birth, and names the double hour of the organ clock from Chinese medicine. The calculator shows this assignment openly.

Date of birth

As exact as you can, ideally from your birth certificate.

The calculation runs in your browser. Your birth data is neither sent nor stored; only this device remembers your last entry.

How the app assigns the chronotype

Three steps:

  1. 1

    The hour of birth

The clock time as on the birth certificate, without conversion.

  2. 2

    The chronotype

    5:00 to 10:00 lion, 10:00 to 17:00 bear, 17:00 to 22:00 wolf, 22:00 to 5:00 dolphin.

  3. 3

    The organ clock

Twelve double hours from 23:00: gallbladder, liver, lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, bladder, kidney, pericardium, triple burner.

Example: born at 14:30

14:30 lies between 10:00 and 17:00: by the assignment the bear. On the organ clock it falls in the double hour from 13:00 to 15:00, given to the small intestine.

How reliable is this assignment?

It is symbolic: when you were born says nothing about when you like to sleep. Your chronotype by Breus shows in his questionnaire or in your sleeping habits. The organ clock is a teaching of Chinese medicine; the app names the double hour of your birth as an image.

The assignment says nothing about your health or your sleep; questions about them belong with a doctor.

Questions about the chronotype by birth time

Does the birth time decide my chronotype?

No. By sleep research, whether you are active early or late depends on your inner clock, which is linked to genes and age among other things. The UmbraLux app uses the hour of birth as a symbol.

What is the organ clock?

A teaching of traditional Chinese medicine: it gives every double hour of the day an organ, beginning at 23:00 with the gallbladder.

Do I need my birth time?

Yes. Without a time the app takes noon and names the bear; it then names no double hour of the organ clock.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; your date and time are neither sent nor stored. Only your device remembers your last entry, and you can delete it below the form.
