Dosha by Birth Chart

By Ayurvedic teaching a practitioner finds your constitution (prakriti) through questions and examination, not from a horoscope. The UmbraLux app still derives doshas from your birth chart: from the elements of the signs your Sun, Moon, Ascendant and planets stand in. The calculator shows this assignment with every point that goes into it.

Date of birth

As exact as you can, ideally from your birth certificate.

Your place is missing? Take the nearest town; a few kilometres hardly change the result.

The calculation runs in your browser. Your birth data is neither sent nor stored; only this device remembers your last entry. · Place data: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0)

How the app derives the doshas

Four steps:

  1. 1

    The elements

Each sign belongs to an element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

  2. 2

    The doshas

Fire counts to Pitta, air to Vata, earth and water to Kapha, each of these two at half, since Kapha would otherwise collect two of the four elements.

  3. 3

    The weights

The Ascendant counts 4, Sun and Moon 3, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn 2, every other point 1; without a birth time the axes drop out.

  4. 4

    The type

Two doshas above 33 % make a pair, otherwise one dosha above 40 % stands alone, otherwise it is Tri-Dosha.

Example: 15 May 1990, 14:30, Berlin

The chart gives Vata 11 %, Pitta 22 % and Kapha 67 %: by the assignment the type Kapha. The table below the result shows what each point adds.

How reliable is this assignment?

It is an assignment, not a diagnosis. Classical Indian astrology assigns the signs otherwise (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 4.5–6: fire signs Pitta, earth signs Vata, air signs mixed, water signs Kapha) and counts the sidereal zodiac; the app follows the elements, as the Ayurvedic texts derive the doshas from them (Vata from air and space, Pitta from fire, Kapha from water and earth).

The assignment says nothing about your health; questions about it belong with a doctor.

Questions about the dosha by birth chart

Can the dosha constitution be calculated from the horoscope?

Not by Ayurvedic teaching: there a practitioner finds the constitution through questions and examination. This calculator shows which doshas the UmbraLux app assigns to the elements of your chart.

Why do earth and water count only half?

Because Kapha collects two of the four elements. Counted in full, 57 percent of 20,000 simulated births came out Kapha; at half weight each single and paired type lies at 12 to 18 percent, Tri-Dosha at 10.

Do I need my birth time?

It helps: the Ascendant weighs most. Without a time the calculator counts the planets only, as the app does.

What is Tri-Dosha?

When all three doshas lie between about 27 and 40 percent and no two are above 33: then the app calls the constitution Tri-Dosha.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; your date, time and place are neither sent nor stored. Only your device remembers your last entry, and you can delete it below the form.
